The Staff Technical Product Owner is an integral member of the product engineering team. **Roles and Responsibilities**
In this role, the Staff Technical Product Owner will ensure that requirements for the near-term upcoming development are sufficiently elaborated, such that the delivery team is enabled to estimate, plan and commit to delivery with high confidence. In addition, the role requires leadership, coaching, mentoring and working in direct collaboration with other global BA teams for an efficient and consistent process resulting in quality deliverables from the engineering team.
+ Drives process definitions and improvements for agile development.
+ Captures the voice of the customer to drive business process definitions and product needs.
+ Work directly with engineering lead to manage the business analysis activities to meet engineering and product goals.
+ Develop positive working relationships with external customers and users.
+ Work directly with Product Managers and / or customers to define scope and value for new developments.
+ Collaborate with Engineering and Product Management to prioritize scope for releases and groom the Product backlog.
+ Responsible for ensuring that non-functional requirements exist and are prioritized alongside the functions in the Product and Release Backlogs.
+ Facilitate the breakdown of the Epic User Stories into "Sprint Sized" User Stories and participate in backlog reviews with the development team.
+ Ensure that the features in the User Stories / requirements are expressed in a way that all members of the team, and stakeholders, clearly understand the requirements and how they fit into the product backlog.
+ Collaborate closely with UX to ensure requirements, scenarios, business process maps and other artifacts align with User Experience designs.
+ Define requirement acceptance criteria with input from customers, product managers, and the engineering team. Generate and execute the required functional test cases.
+ Validates that test scenarios meet the feature acceptance criteria and customer expectations.
+ Responsible for the maintenance and quality of the documented user stories/requirements in the defined requirements management tool.
+ Throughout the development cycle, remain focused on the software being produced and whether it meets the requirements. Proactively provide relevant feedback to internal and external stakeholders.
+ Develop and be prepared to execute effective demonstrations of the product, to internal and external stakeholders.
+ Maintain leading edge understanding of technologies and industry trends relevant to the application via training, webinars, on-line journals, Trade Shows and User Groups.
+ Lead other business analysts, agree, and monitor objectives and undertake regular feedback.
**Education Qualifications:**
+ Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related major, and a minimum of 5 years of experience.

Accountabilities

In this position, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Defining and owning the product vision and roadmap for Kafka/data engineering capabilities, translating business needs into prioritized backlogs with clear acceptance criteria and KPIs.
  • Collaborating with Data, Analytics, Marketing, and Product teams to define event models, SLAs, integration requirements, and ensure stakeholder alignment on priorities and trade-offs.
  • Shaping the architecture and evolution of Kafka-based pipelines (topics, partitions, retention, compaction, Connect/Debezium, Streams/ksqlDB), partnering with engineers to ensure scalable, secure, and cost-efficient solutions.
  • Driving schema governance (Avro/Protobuf), data quality enforcement, and compliance with GDPR/CCPA, PII handling, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Managing backlog grooming, sprint planning, and delivery tracking to meet throughput, latency, and consumer lag targets.
  • Continuously evaluating improvements for reliability, latency reduction, and cost-efficiency, while exploring new tools and best practices in data streaming and event-driven systems.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you should bring:

  • 4+ years of experience as a Product Owner or Technical Product Owner in data engineering, streaming, or related domains.
  • Proven ability to define and communicate a product vision and roadmap, aligning with business goals and stakeholders.
  • Hands-on experience in backlog management, user story creation, prioritization techniques (MoSCoW, WSJF, RICE), and defining acceptance criteria.
  • Strong experience with Agile/Scrum/Kanban frameworks, backlog grooming, and sprint ceremonies.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, translating business outcomes into technical user stories, defining KPIs/SLAs, and balancing trade-offs.
  • Technical understanding of event-driven architectures and Kafka ecosystem (Confluent, Kafka Connect, Schema Registry, Streams/ksqlDB).
  • Knowledge of data governance, compliance, and security practices (GDPR/CCPA, PII, encryption, RBAC/ACLs).

I am currently supporting a Financial Services client of mine who are looking to bring on a Product Owner on an initial 12 month contract with scope of extensions. This opportunity will require you to go into the Nottingham office 2 days a week with my client being able to pay up to 550 per day inside IR35 via an umbrella.

The role will involve working as part of a cross functional team including product, design, software engineering, quality assurance and commercial. The role has a focus on the delivery stage of the product lifecycle working with product managers who have more of a focus on the strategic and discovery stage. Maintaining, nurturing and improving our product experience is a critical part of our business and our product owners are a key part of this.

You'll have ownership and focus of a team backlog, working closely with our engineering team to plan and deliver features aligned to the product vision and strategy. You'll be working with a team to plan increments of work with stretching shared objectives and key results. You will also be leading refinement of new work to create solutions to customer problems that deliver business value as well as lender and cross system integration's.

Product development of both web and mobile app experience will be essential along with Product development in a regulated business (financial services would be ideal)
