Our client, a leading consultancy firm in the power infrastructure sector, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Power Systems Protection Engineer. This hybrid role, based in our Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, UK office, will involve a combination of on-site work and remote flexibility. You will be responsible for the design, specification, testing, and commissioning of protection and control systems for a wide range of electrical power systems, including transmission, distribution, and generation networks. Your expertise will be crucial in ensuring the reliable and safe operation of critical infrastructure.

You will work on challenging projects involving substations, overhead lines, underground cables, and renewable energy integration. This includes developing protection philosophies, selecting appropriate protection relays and schemes, conducting fault level calculations, and preparing detailed engineering documentation. You will also provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate effectively with project managers, clients, and other engineering disciplines. A strong understanding of relevant industry standards and best practices is essential.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement protection and control schemes for high-voltage electrical systems.
  • Specify and select protection relays, circuit breakers, and associated equipment.
  • Perform fault studies, load flow analysis, and transient stability studies using industry-standard software (e.g., ETAP, PSS/E, DigSilent).
  • Prepare detailed engineering designs, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Witness and approve factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT) for protection and control equipment.
  • Provide technical support during the construction, commissioning, and operational phases of projects.
  • Ensure compliance with national and international standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE, G5).

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in power system protection engineering, preferably within a consultancy or utility environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of protection principles for various types of power system equipment (generators, transformers, lines, cables).
  • Proficiency in using power system analysis software for protection studies.
  • Experience with modern digital protective relays and communication protocols (e.g., IEC 61850).

**Essential Responsibilities**
+ Will work with the existing program Engineering Manager to take on day to day Lead power systems design and test activities for the delivery of the associated project electrical Systems.

Development and analysis of full country electrical networks for GB, AUS, and Ireland for deployment of technology.nOptimal operation of powers systems (optimal dispatch and unit commitment)nPower system markets and forecasting through machine learning (still in the development phase)nSteady state and dynamic model of synchronous and inverter-based generators for power flow/stability analysisnPerform Steady-State, Short Circuit, Transient Stability, protective device coordination, electromagnetic transient (EMT) analyses and arc flash studies using simulation tools such as Digsilent Powerfactory, PSCADnVoltage-Ride Through (VRT), Frequency Ride-Through (FRT) and reactive power requirementsnProvide support for the marketing and sales team (pre- and post-) to develop and simulate various use cases in response to customer site specific requirementsnSupport our engineering team based in Australia, Dubai, Manchester and London.nPrepare reports, drawings, and one-line diagrams (OLD)nProcess, generate and maintain data as required for other engineering-related studiesnStudy alternative engineering solutions for project optimizationnProvide power systems technical support on Executive DesignnProvide technical support during design, procurement, construction and commissioningnFamiliar with equipment selection and specification taking into account technical, commercial, operational, reliability and safety aspectsnAutomation and control skills in monitoring systemsnPerform other power systems duties as assignednEssential qualifications

Degree in Electrical Engineering or STEM Specialized in Energy SystemsnFamiliarity with power systems equivalent to 1-3 years industry experience or PhDnStrong knowledge and understanding of the grid functioning, stability and planningnExperience with power system modelling in Electrical Engineering softwarenBasic coding experience (data science)nProactive in learning and adapting to new concepts and methodologiesnProficient in MS OfficenFluency in the English languagenExcellent communication and presentation skills with ability to present data analysis and simulation results internally and to customernPassion for power system modelling and computational modellingnDesirable qualifications
