Our client, a pioneering firm in advanced robotics and automation, is looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their innovative team in Norwich, Norfolk, UK . This hybrid role combines on-site collaboration with flexible remote working, allowing you to contribute to cutting-edge projects that are shaping the future of industrial automation. You will be responsible for the complete mechanical design lifecycle of robotic systems, from conceptualization and detailed design through to prototyping, testing, and production support. This position demands creativity, technical excellence, and a passion for solving complex engineering challenges.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the mechanical design of robotic systems and components, including end-effectors, manipulators, and automated machinery.
  • Develop detailed 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks or similar software.
  • Perform stress analysis, thermal analysis, and dynamic simulations using FEA tools to validate designs.
  • Select appropriate materials, bearings, actuators, and sensors, considering performance, cost, and reliability.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical engineers, software engineers, and systems engineers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Oversee prototype development, build, and testing, troubleshooting issues and iterating on designs.
  • Work with manufacturing partners to ensure designs are optimized for production and assembly.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, including design reports, BOMs, and user manuals.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in robotics, materials, and manufacturing technologies.

Required Qualifications:
  • BEng/MEng in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Experience with FEA software (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus) for structural and thermal analysis.
  • Strong understanding of mechanisms, kinematics, dynamics, and control systems.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of manufacturing processes (e.g., CNC machining, injection molding, 3D printing).
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving design issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Experience with hybrid working models and ability to manage time effectively between home and office.
