  • Positive influence on sales growth by reduction of existing Operational constraints to sales, as well as driving NPD and new opportunities.
  • Support site validations as required and ensure projects are executed following a structured approach and are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Development of strong process engineering and validation protocols capturing industry best practise and utilising strong statistical techniques.
  • Introduction of new equipment and products driven by a focus on consistent and repeatable processes parameters.
  • Timely resolution of identified deviations and implementation of effective actions to correct and prevent recurrence.
  • Effective training delivered to the process engineering team to ensure relevant competency is established & maintained.
  • Documented standard processes exist for all processes within your area of responsibility and objectives are met (Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery) when standard processes are followed.
  • Demonstrated delivery of continuous improvement on processes.
  • Changes / improvements to existing processes, introduction of new processes, new equipment and new products are implemented & transferred to manufacturing in a controlled manner.
  • Develop team to remove single points of failure in all Processability.
  • Annual demonstrated improvements in OEE and material variance, through a targeted approach.

What will this role involve?

In close collaboration with Manufacturing, Quality R&D and Group Engineering, support assigned capital expenditure projects to improve existing manufacturing processes, including:

  • Development of technical requirements for new processes / new equipment (URS)
  • Preparation and documentation of capital expenditure requests with supporting business case documentation.
  • Selection of suppliers for optimal cost / quality based on detailed quotations linked to technical requirements documented.
  • Assist the Project management of testing, on-site installation and validation of new processes / new equipment including management of project timelines, budget and the transfer of new processes / new equipment into manufacturing, leading the project management activities where appropriate.

Enable introduction of improved processes and new products into manufacturing including:

  • Assessment and resolution of issues linked to process capability, automation and up-scaling processes from development to commercial production.
  • Plan & execute validation activities whilst documenting process and product activities in line with agreed cross-functional responsibilities.
  • Development of new standard processes manufacturing supported with initial procedures, training and coaching of manufacturing staff.
  • Introduction of Industrialised products focused on long term repeatability and sustainability.
  • Preparation and review of documents within the validation life cycle including URS, FAT, SAT. Collaboration with site validation to develop and execute IQ, OQ, PQ. Ensuring work is completed in compliance with BSI, FDA and all other regulatory agency standards.
  • Investigate and resolve issues related to the technical performance or the workability of the manufacturing processes closely working with production and quality and following all applicable procedures (change control, CAPA, validation, procedures, training).
  • In collaboration with site validation, deliver the ongoing programme of machine and process validations in line with agreed timescales and in compliance with the relevant medical device regulations.
  • Ensure that Process Engineering personnel are fully competent to deliver the validation programme.
  • Ensure ISO standard validation compliance for projects.
  • Support in the preparation for internal and external audits.
  • Ensure an appropriate Operations Core Team Member is representing the Operations function for all NPD and new opportunity projects.
  • Work effectively with other AMS departments/sites as well as external suppliers.
  • Develop & achieve functional strategy based on ways of working and enablement of industrialisation projects.
  • Provide support to production as required to ensure continuity of production.

Knowledge & Skills

  • BS or equivalent in scientific discipline or the abilities that are typically acquired through a minimum of 4+ years’ experience in medical device or pharmaceutical industries.

  • Must be proficient in the knowledge of applicable Quality Regulations and ISO quality requirements.
  • Knowledge of the Medical Device regulation.
  • Proficient in knowledge of Manufacturing, Engineering, Validation, Change Control, and Design Control processes.

What will you do on the programme?

Join our Chemical and Process Engineering Graduate Programme and support the upkeep of the Royal Navy's fleet of nuclear-powered submarines at Devonport, Western Europe's largest naval base.

As a Graduate Chemical and Process Engineer, you'll play a vital role in supporting the design, analysis and maintenance of nuclear systems that ensure the safe and efficient operation of submarines and radiologically controlled facilities.

You'll apply your knowledge of Mechanical, Chemical or Process Engineering to develop solutions to a wide range of technical challenges. Your work will involve ensuring compliance with design codes, maintaining quality assurance, specifying pipework components, assessing material strength and integrity, and managing pressure control and protection systems. You'll also explore mechanical and chemical compatibility, fluid flow dynamics and stress analysis.

Throughout the programme, you'll be involved in the development and modification of system designs, conducting technical analysis, producing engineering drawings and models using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, writing detailed technical reports, and performing inspections and validations in radiologically controlled areas – including onboard submarines. Every task you take on will contribute to the safe operation of nuclear infrastructure and the continued readiness of the Royal Navy.

How is the programme structured?

This is a Facilities Engineering Development Programme, delivered on-site at Devonport, Plymouth.

Over two years, you'll complete a series of placements lasting between 6 and 16 weeks. These will take place across specialist teams working in offices, onboard submarines, and in supporting facilities. Each placement is designed to build your technical expertise, broaden your understanding of nuclear systems, and prepare you for a future role as a Nuclear Process Engineer.

In this role, you will be part of the Energy Transition Process team developing innovative solutions to complex problems, delivering projects at various stages of maturity. Working as part of a large multidisciplinary engineering group, you will oversee the development of process plant designs on a wide range of energy projects, including conventional power plant, carbon capture schemes, hydrogen generation and transportation, gas networks, energy from waste plants, and industrial facilities.

This is an ideal role if you have exposure in the delivery of concept, FEED, and detail design work and are familiar with working for an OEM, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, or a similar organisation. Your experience of working in operations and maintenance (O&M) and understanding of asset integrity processes and procedures would be advantageous in helping us support our clients with technical advice on their existing facilities and operational plant.
Location is flexible across our UK office network.

You will head the team to deliver the following:
  • Leading the Process engineering team on projects to deliver technically excellent solutions to our clients across a broad portfolio of projects.
  • Work on projects in a variety of stages of maturity, including feasibility studies, concept designs, FEED Studies, value engineering and detailed design. There will be opportunities for site work during project development, construction and commissioning.
  • Prepare process models / calculations, process datasheets, heat and mass balances, process flow diagrams, piping & instrumentation drawings and process philosophies.
  • Generate and maintain internal tools and calculations.
  • Providing visible technical and team leadership and governance.
  • Developing designs and approaches that clearly differentiate WSP from our competitors.
  • Promote and lead innovation across the team and the application of engineering principles to first of a kind projects.
  • Working collaboratively with other groups within WSP and maximising cross-selling opportunities.
  • Support business leadership in the preparation and review of key bids, provide input into pricing strategy.
  • Identification of skills gaps and recruitment of technical staff.
  • Maintaining and developing processes and procedure to ensure efficient delivery of design.
  • Support and ensure the integration of UK wide best practice i.e. BMS, SHEQ.
  • Interface with GCC and promote its effective use within the region.

Working together with private developers, power utilities, government bodies, banks, lending agencies, contractors and OEM's we safely deliver projects whilst meeting and exceeding client expectations.

Our teams are tactically placed in the UK, India, Ireland and wider Europe. We work internationally with our clients and other Energy sector teams in North America, Middle East, Africa, South America, Asia, New Zealand and Australia.

The Energy Transition team provides services to Clients from inception through development, construction, operation, and decommissioning. An approach that sees us support our clients over the entire lifecycle of a project.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:
  • Degree in relevant Engineering subject (Chemical Engineering degree preferred);
  • Chartered Chemical Engineer and Member of relevant Engineering Institute;
  • Significant post graduate experience in process design;
  • The ability and desire to assume a lead role in the development of process deliverables;
  • Knowledge of design and construction of power and energy projects, ideally including low or zero carbon technologies and gasification;
  • Proven understanding of the design process and ability to demonstrate working knowledge of brief/scope documents, design concepts as well as experienced in producing calculations;
  • Experience of working with process design software packages such as Thermoflow, Aspen Hysys, UniSim etc.;
  • Experience of working with clients and contractors with a diverse range of objectives in achieving a technical solution.
