Hays Construction is working alongside an established contractor, with over 100 years of expertise in delivering projects across the UK. Our client is now seeking a H&S Advisor to join their company on a long-term for a minimum of 6 months, and also the possibility of a permanent position.
A multi-site project, all based locally in Yorkshire & Humber, with hybrid working.
This role is working in a high security environment, so you must be able to pass vetting and security clearance upon start.

Your new role

As a H&S Advisor, you will play a key role in shaping and driving the strategic development of the department. You will help maintain and continuously improve the company's excellent health and safety, environmental and sustainability records by:

  • Ensure company-wide compliance with all relevant legislation and standards across company sites
  • Provide advice, support, and guidance to staff
  • Act as the key point of contact for all H&S matters
  • Lead the management and maintenance of H&S systems to ISO 45001 and 14001 standards, in line with construction industry specific requirements.
  • Identify, organise and, where required, deliver training
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, ensuring accurate reporting, analysis and corrective action

KEY DUTIES

  • To work with the Estates Compliance Manager in implementing the Health & Safety Strategy that meets health and safety legislative requirements.
  • Support the Estates Compliance Manager with the implementation of an annual work plan in line with local and statutory requirements
  • Support the organisation to meet compliance against relevant health and safety related standards within legislative requirements.
  • Work with the Estates Compliance Manager in ensuring the delivery of health and safety systems and processes in line with statutory responsibilities.
  • Support schools in the application of the Trust Health and Safety arrangements and the use and management of the Parago system. .

LIAISON AND COMMUNICATION

  • To maintain an up-to-date electronic diary, weekly/monthly overview to ensure organisation of own diary is communicated with key staff across the Trust
  • To establish methods of liaison with the Finance Manager and other parts of the central team to ensure your team is working in partnership
  • To communicate effectively with a range of Trust personnel including (but not exclusively) the CEO, CFO and Finance Manager
  • Business Managers and Finance Leads in the academies

WORKING TIME

  • This is a full-time post, 37 hours per week, year-round but with flexibility available at first for the right candidate
  • Core working hours are usually agreed between 8.00am and 5pm, however the post holder may be required to work outside of normal working hours on occasion, with due notice.

What's the mission?
Reporting to our Site Operations Manager, you will lead SHEQ Compliance (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality) at Mells, in relation to the Management systems. You'll work closely with site teams and support functions to ensure adherence to both internal standards and external regulations.

  • Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and performance monitoring, using internal scoring systems to ensure consistent high standards.
  • Lead investigations into accidents, incidents, and near-misses, ensuring thorough reporting, root cause analysis, and implementation of lessons learned.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture across projects, fostering engagement with site teams, subcontractors, and operatives.
  • Support and champion compliance with external accreditations such as ISO 45001, CHAS, SafeContractor, and CCS.
  • Maintain professional relationships with regulatory authorities including the HSE, attending workshops and staying up-to-date with current industry standards.
  • Represent Health & Safety at client and internal meetings, chair site safety reviews, and actively contribute to the Health, Safety & Leadership Team (HSLT).


Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned professional with strong interpersonal and leadership skills. You will demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience in a Health & Safety Advisor or Senior Advisor role, ideally in construction or engineering projects.
  • A deep understanding of electrical safety, with practical experience in risk management and compliance.
  • Knowledge and experience of the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) and a commitment to fostering considerate, safe construction environments.
  • Integrity, honesty, and confidence to communicate and challenge at all levels of the business.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, resilience, and a proactive, solutions-focused approach.
  • Ability to lead, influence, and support the development of others.
  • Strong organisational skills, able to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Competency in IT, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • A professional and smart appearance, consistently representing the company’s standards.
