What to Expect on the Programme

Operations supports AWE's mission by taking the demand from our customer programmes to deliver the products and services they need to fulfil the needs of the Defence Nuclear Organisation (Ministry of Defence) in maintaining our national security.

We have a diverse range of products across Operations from a technical report, to experimental tests, to a fully assembled nuclear warhead. Operations is also responsible for keeping our sites open, safe and secure.

The role will be within Nuclear Material Operations and is NOT a lab based role.

This group provides the Company Policy & Training to support the Accountancy & Control of Strategic Materials (Accountable Nuclear Materials and Other Special Materials) They deliver the Company Annual Accounts to the Defence Nuclear Organisation for these materials and undertake independent Auditing and Verification of Strategic materials in our facilities at AWE(A) & AWE(B). They provide Suitably Qualified & Experienced Personnel Nuclear Material Inventory Control staff in facilities to oversee material moves and processing. They Maintain & Develop the Fissile Material Control System used in our Production Facilities to support Criticality Safety, Movement Control & Accountancy.

* Working in an operational facility with Nuclear Materials and undertaking respirator operations.

* Gaining an understanding of a how a Nuclear facility operates including:- planning, production processes , safety case, criticality safety, training and generating & complying with regulation, policy & local work instructions.

* Opportunity to visit various facilities and undertake Physical Verification and Audits of Nuclear Materials and Processes.

* Opportunity to gain an appreciation of the challenges in transitioning to new facilities and providing SME knowledge into projects.

* Gaining an appreciation of the legislative Nuclear material & accountancy requirements, generation of accounts and how these support our Licensed Conditions , Defence Nuclear Security, National Audit Office, Environmental Permits and our Strategic Materials Strategy.

* Interactions with various stakeholders including our DNO customer.

Candidates must be medically fit and able to wear a respirator when working in the materials area of operations as and when required as PPE during their placement. You will be fully trained and undergo a thorough induction process when working in the operations function.

As a nuclear safety case assessor, you will work as part of a team to assess the risk and consequences of design, engineering, and operational failures. This will include modelling accident scenarios and identifying controls to prevent them.

The role offers the opportunity to work across the whole project lifecycle including design of new facilities, large modifications of existing facilities, production facilities, research & development facilities, and decommissioning facilities as part of a structured two-year development programme. The role also provides the opportunity to develop an understanding of how AWE interacts with its regulators.

You will be engaged in technical problem-solving, preparing detailed reports to argue and justify the tolerability of nuclear, radiological, environmental, and conventional hazards, whilst liaising with a diverse group of people at many levels within the company including operators, facility management, engineers, and regulators.

The Nuclear Safety Case Assessor:

* Develop skills in major hazard assessment and support the analysis and assessment of nuclear, radiological, chemical, explosives and other major hazards associated with actual, planned and/or decommissioned facilities, plant, equipment, or product.

* Gain experience in the development of safety assessments and justifications (e.g., Safety Cases) in line with relevant legislation, industry standards and AWE's policies, procedures and guidance.

* Continuously develop their understanding of current health and safety legislation, the ONR licensing regime and the fundamental application of the ALARP principle.

* Whilst supervised, contribute to the production and review of safety assessments, justifications.

The Application Process

Online test: If successful, you will be invited to complete our online assessment stage . These include online testing against numerical, verbal, logical and cognitive reasoning tests. Don't be intimidated: practice assessments will be available so you will be fully equipped with the knowledge of what to expect.

Virtual assessment: Those successful at testing will be invited to our virtual assessment centres . These run throughout November into January 2026 - we'll confirm the exact dates in an email. We run pre-assessment centre webinars to guide you on what to expect.

Belcan Workforce Solutions is seeking a proactive and experienced Nuclear Waste Engineer to support a major decommissioning programme in Kent. This long-term contract offers the opportunity to contribute to a high-impact project within a regulated environment.

Minimum Requirement: To provide a quality and responsive waste management service for the decommissioning projects and site infrastructure in order to secure compliant disposal of waste volumes and assist the execution of key waste targets delivered from the projects.

  • Provision of technical support within the Waste Management organisation.
  • To provide technical support to projects and relay the clear expectations of waste management.
  • Provide technical support to current and future project design and implementation.
  • Provide authoritative advice for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Carry out timely investigation of events as required and identify improvements.
  • Commit to continuous improvement of waste programmes/strategies.
  • Contribute to the effective development and delivery of training within own area of specialism.
  • Design, delivery and evaluation of training, acting as coach and mentor.
  • Support colleague's learning and development through knowledge sharing, task instruction etc.
  • As a customer-focused individual, the post holder will be expected to support delivery within his or her range of skills, knowledge, experience and competence.
  • Comply with the Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality policies, procedures, work instructions and risk assessments. Support the continuous improvement of Health, Safety Environment and Quality

Essential:

  • Knowledge of environmental issues including practices, policies, legislation and stakeholders relating to radioactive and non-radioactive waste management
  • Relevant experience in nuclear industry in areas of waste management/decommissioning experience
  • Candidate should be able to work solo, be proactive and organised
  • Experience of authoring technical work, verification, radiological fingerprints experience, characterisation background
  • HNC/HND or equivalent technical qualification (NQF Level 5) in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline

Desirable:

  • Experience in developing waste inventories together with records management
  • Dangerous Good Safety Advisor Certificate
  • International Movement of Dangerous Goods Certificate
