The role

The Independent is seeking a news reporter to join the title’s UK desk in London.


The right candidate will be an experienced reporter, able to pitching and write agenda-setting original stories, as well as helming live coverage and turning around breaking news quickly.


The right candidate will be an NCTJ-trained journalist with a strong news background with a firm grasp on all aspects of digital publishing.


The ability to source and verify information independently for publication, as well as understanding how best to use trusted sourcing is essential. The right journalist will be a confident reporter as well as an aggregator.


You will be expected to be comfortable managing multiple priorities in a calm and methodical manner, and possess the ability to thrive in breaking and changing news situations.

The role is ideal for a journalist looking to build their financial reporting experience working for an established global media brand and wanting to cultivate fruitful relationships with some of the most influential investors in the US.

We need reporters hungry for news, who will come in and hit the phones to uncover exclusive information for our subscribers and build strong relationships with industry execs. Reporters should be comfortable interviewing senior investment staff at large allocators and pressing them for valuable intelligence, as well as digging through reports and regulatory filings for news.

Responsibilities:

  • You’ll be working as part of a fast-paced news team, with daily news conferences and story targets to ensure we are providing our asset manager subscribers with the actionable intelligence they need from us, ahead of the game. 
  • You’ll be working with editorial and research colleagues across our global footprint to track the investment decisions of the world’s largest and most sophisticated investors, including US public pensions, endowments, foundations, sovereign wealth funds and corporate pensions.

**The Role** : The Price Reporter for EMEA Metals Markets is a market reporter based in London who takes responsibility for day-to-day reporting on metals markets for Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights in the Europe Middle East and Africa region.

The EMEA metals pricing team is a dynamic team responsible for key pricing benchmarks across the region. The price reporter will work with colleagues in London and globally, in an often fast-paced environment.
**Responsibilities & Impact:** We are seeking a market reporter for to drive our metals pricing coverage in Europe. The successful candidate will be part of a global team and possess knowledge of market intelligence-gathering activities and assessing prices, applying Platts methodology. This individual must be comfortable writing about pricing information and interpreting data. Being a team player is of utmost importance in this role.
+ _Assess markets_ : The market reporter in this position assesses the value of metals market products in EMEA, accurately and fully in line with our rigorous and well-known methodology. The market reporter will survey market participants throughout the day; publish price updates through the day, especially all information that might be used in assessing value; demonstrate a thorough understanding of Platts' methodology; be rigorous when using mathematics and excel spreadsheets; demonstrate ability to do a full set of assessments without the aid of a spreadsheet; and ensure our methodology for market is up to date. The market reporter may launch new assessments and represent Platts at industry events such as conferences or in face-to-face meetings.
+ _Write high-quality market commentaries:_ The market reporter is responsible for writing commentaries associated with his or her metals market assessments. The commentaries are intended to help our readers better understand what is happening in the market, and how we have arrived at our assessments. The reporter should ensure commentaries meet our editorial standards for writing and reporting.
+ _Report news about the markets_ : The market reporter also may be responsible for reporting news and analysis relating to his or her market and come up with ideas for graphics, podcasts, webinars. The news should help our readers understand issues in the marketplace, whether they are traders, analysts, government regulators, working in the metals supply chain, or in another walk of life. Relevant stories include news about supply and demand developments, government data, new developments in regulations, trade flows, general analysis of price trends, decarbonization of metals, energy transition and other relevant topics. The market reporter works closely with the news desk, the Manager Price Reporting, and others to identify and write insightful news stories and demonstrate a strong sense of what news our readers want to see.
+ _Engage with the industry:_ The market reporter is responsible for engaging with market sources and should find and nurture new market sources; maintain a good relationship with existing sources; ensure source lists are up to date; send summaries of meetings to manager and immediate colleagues and avoid an over-reliance on Instant Messaging.

**The Role** : The Associate Price Reporter for EMEA Metals Markets is a market reporter based in London who takes responsibility for day-to-day reporting on metals markets for Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights in the Europe Middle East and Africa region.

**Responsibilities & Impact:** We are seeking a market reporter for to drive our metals pricing coverage in Europe. The successful candidate will be part of a global team and possess knowledge of market intelligence-gathering activities and assessing prices, applying Platts methodology. This individual must be comfortable writing about pricing information and interpreting data. Being a team player is of utmost importance in this role.
+ _Assess markets_ : The market reporter in this position assesses the value of metals market products in EMEA, accurately and fully in line with our rigorous and well-known methodology. The market reporter will survey market participants throughout the day; publish price updates through the day, especially all information that might be used in assessing value; demonstrate a thorough understanding of Platts' methodology; be rigorous when using mathematics and excel spreadsheets; demonstrate ability to do a full set of assessments without the aid of a spreadsheet; and ensure our methodology for market is up to date. The market reporter may launch new assessments and represent Platts at industry events such as conferences or in face-to-face meetings.
+ _Write high-quality market commentaries:_ The market reporter is responsible for writing commentaries associated with his or her metals market assessments. The commentaries are intended to help our readers better understand what is happening in the market, and how we have arrived at our assessments. The reporter should ensure commentaries meet our editorial standards for writing and reporting.
+ _Report news about the markets_ : The market reporter also may be responsible for reporting news and analysis relating to his or her market and come up with ideas for graphics, podcasts, webinars. The news should help our readers understand issues in the marketplace, whether they are traders, analysts, government regulators, working in the metals supply chain, or in another walk of life. Relevant stories include news about supply and demand developments, government data, new developments in regulations, trade flows, general analysis of price trends, decarbonization of metals, energy transition and other relevant topics. The market reporter works closely with the news desk, the Manager Price Reporting, and others to identify and write insightful news stories and demonstrate a strong sense of what news our readers want to see.
+ _Engage with the industry:_ The market reporter is responsible for engaging with market sources and should find and nurture new market sources; maintain a good relationship with existing sources; ensure source lists are up to date; send summaries of meetings to manager and immediate colleagues and avoid an over-reliance on Instant Messaging.

**The Team: **   As an apprentice looking to build and apply journalistic skills, you will join the global Market Reporting and Trading Solutions (MRTS) team, with the aim of becoming a Price Reporter and specialist in commodities markets. We are looking for apprentices who can work well within a team and can demonstrate exceptional learning agility, creativity, and problem-solving ability. Beyond that though, we're also looking for commitment and enthusiasm. This Apprenticeship place deep investment in you as an individual. That means we need you to match that commitment: you'll turn up every day ready to work hard, push yourself, and think differently about what you're capable of. You'll have the backing of a global firm, and you'll rise to that expectation.

· Learn and demonstrate successful interviewing techniques and how to obtain data for commentary  
· Write concise, informative commentary and team briefing documents
