An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented and experienced Drives Control Application Software Engineer to join GE Power Conversion's Engineering group working on new technology and contribute to the design and development of our next generation products.
A the Drives Control Application Software Engineer you will be responsible for developing the Control Application Software for GE Power (PC)'s range of new Electric Drive Systems. This is a technical role and will involve working in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to specify, design, code & validate application software for MW-scale power electronic drive systems for Marine, Naval, Energy and Industry applications.
**This Role Involves**
+ Responsibility for the design, development and maintenance of Drive Control Application Software including:
+ Requirements, design, implementation and testing of control application software for converter systems and electrical drives,
+ Writing application software that interfacing to other peripheral equipment,
+ Validation of application software using Hardware In the Loop (HIL) rigs and Laboratory test drives,
+ Developing and maintaining good engineering interfaces to other engineering teams such as, Power Electronics, Automation and Power System teams to provide a fully Integrated System Solution,
+ Supporting commissioning and validation of electrical drive systems.
**Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited university or college (or equivalent qualification) in Electrical Engineering or equivalent subject.
**Essential Requirement**
+ Experience working with Variable Speed Drives Application Software,
+ Experience implementing and validating Application Software,
+ Experience in capturing & creating requirements documents, technical reports, and functional design documents,
+ Good understanding of converter system and power converter topologies for AC/DC, DC/AC and DC to DC converter systems, etc,
+ Willing to travel to customer site for meetings or equipment validation,
+ be eligible to obtain UK security clearance to BPSS clearance level or higher.
**Desired, Not Essential Requirement**
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills.
+ Experienced in creating and presenting technical reports and responding to clients' technical questions.
+ Good understanding of drive control system architectures.
+ Strong understanding of electrical machines: DC, Induction, Synchronous and Permanent magnet machines.

  • Occasionally travel domestically and internationally for support and commissioning.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Approximately 10 years of experience in electrical/software engineering, ideally in the packaging or capital equipment industry.
  • Strong knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, Rockwell, Beckhoff, and Zenon software.
  • Understanding of CE, NEC (NFPA 70/79), CSA, and UL standards.
  • Proficient in using Sistema for safety level analysis.
  • Experience with product handling and servo motion technology.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Effective communicator and team collaborator.
  • Highly organized, customer-focused, and detail-oriented.

Job Summary

Senior Electrical and Software Design Engineer required for permanent, full-time work in bristol

This role involves designing advanced electrical control systems for packaging machinery. The position requires expertise in using AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN for schematic design, conducting machinery safety analysis using Sistema, and developing software for automation systems including PLC, HMI, motion control, and safety systems, primarily with Rockwell, Beckhoff, Zenon, Pilz, and Phoenix technologies.

  • 45,000-58,000 depending on experience
  • Monday to Friday

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead electrical design activities for customer-specific projects.
  • Participate in client meetings to advise on electrical system design.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical and electrical engineers to ensure integrated project development.
  • Contribute innovative solutions and ideas to improve project outcomes.
