About the Role
We are seeking a qualified Lawyer to provide legal and advisory services to Dorset Council, its Directorates, and external clients. You will be responsible for ensuring legality and propriety in Council matters while delivering professional advice, drafting, negotiation, and representation in relevant practice areas.
This is a full-time role (37 hours per week), with flexibility to work from home. The team meets in Dorchester on Tuesdays for a weekly team meeting. Court attendance, usually at Bournemouth County Court, may also be required.
What is the day-to-day of the role:
- Provide legal advice, drafting, negotiation, and representation for Dorset Council and external clients.
- Prepare and conduct litigation, including advocacy in courts, tribunals, and panels.
- Represent the Head of Legal Services at committees, working groups, and departmental meetings.
- Instruct Counsel and liaise with external providers where appropriate.
- Advise on case law, legislation, and procedural changes.
- Support colleagues within the Legal Services team and contribute to training seminars.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Qualified Lawyer, Barrister, or Legal Executive.
- Degree-level education.
- Post-qualification experience in relevant practice areas.
- Ability to draft legal documentation, research, problem-solve, and undertake advocacy.
