**Your role and responsibilities**
IBM Consulting is seeking an experienced Oracle Database Administrator (DBA) to join the Application Operations team supporting a government client and project. This position requires hands-on expertise in managing and optimising Oracle database systems, ensuring performance, security, and reliability in a production environment. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in Oracle DBA practices and an appreciation of multiple related technologies, with the potential advantage of experience in Oracle Apex.
Responsibilities
* Administer, manage, and monitor Oracle databases for optimal performance and availability.
* Execute routine database maintenance, backup, and recovery processes.
* Ensure database security, integrity, and compliance with client requirements.
* Perform tuning and optimisation of SQL queries and database configurations.
* Collaborate with application developers and other technical teams to support database-related requirements.
* Support deployments and upgrades in coordination with the Application Operations team.
* Maintain documentation for database configurations and operational procedures.
* Participate in incident and problem management processes for database-related issues.
**Required technical and professional expertise**
* Proven experience as an Oracle Database Administrator in an enterprise or government setting.
* Proficient in Oracle database installation, configuration, patching, and upgrading.
* Strong knowledge of database backup and recovery methodologies.
* Performance tuning and troubleshooting skills.
* Ability to work within a structured ITIL-aligned support environment.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
* SQL Development Java E business Suite experience CI/CD practices

Within Future, Marketforce is the business unit focused on Circulation Newsstand in the UK and globally. With more than 30-years of experience, Marketforce leads the way in magazine distribution, global sales and marketing for a wide range of publishing partners which includes the Future portfolio. It is the #1 magazine distributor distributing over 200 million copies worldwide each year.
The Marketforce applications are bespoke and purpose built, on the foundations of Oracle (19c)/ ORACLE Forms (64bit) 12.2.1.3.0 and WebLogic 12.2.1.3.0 and Microsoft .NET technologies, using both waterfall and agile methodologies. The exception is our BI reporting tool, Business Objects XI (BOXI) , a proprietary SAP product. Developer tools and supporting products exist which are used to aid the ongoing developments of the applications.
Underpinning the applications is a suite of ORACLE distributed 19c databases, hosted on multiple ORACLE Data Appliance hardware.
This position requires the individual to become the ORACLE / ORACLE Forms technical expert for applications, BAU delivery, enhancements, developments and the primary contact for the business, each engineer also has to provide secondary cover for other applications based on their technology experience
What you'll be doing.
The Circulation Tech team of 10, consists of Project Managers, Business Analysts, ORACLE and Software Engineers. Additionally the team is the conduit for Infrastructure/ Networks based projects, working closely with an extended team to manage and deliver change through to Marketforce and its applications.
The team works closely with other partners:
- Future colleagues such as Finance (NetSuite) team, Editorial, Production, Tech & Engineering teams
- Marketforce partners such as 3rd party (non-Future) publishers, wholesalers, retailers, carriers, International distributors
Experience that will put you ahead of the curve.
- Experience in database development using Oracle PL/SQL
- SQL writing skills and data analysis using SQLPlus/ Toad/ SQL developer
- Experience in debugging and performance tuning PL/SQL code
- Experience in Oracle Forms 12c (Oracle Fusion Middleware)
- Experience with ETL processing, data extraction, transform and load
- Good problem solving and analytical skills
- Knowledge of database best practices
- A willingness to learn and develop
- Multi-tasking, prioritise and deliver and communicate accordingly
- Front facing with business stakeholders
- Strong communication and documentation skills
- Code management using GitLab
- Utilising Atlassian Jira and Confluence

The role is offering up to £75,000 per annum dependant on experience along with a competitive benefits package

Reports to and works under the administrative supervision of the Software Development Team Lead.
SummaryThe IT Database and Applications Developer is a member of the Software Development Team who are responsible for delivering platforms and solutions to the business and its clients.
The candidate is responsible for the development and maintenance of database dependent platforms and solutions, as well as the ongoing maintenance and management of the company’s database installations.
Working together with the IT Infrastructure Team, the IT Database Developer assumes responsibility for all aspects of database operation.
The candidate will also be expected to write and modify desktop applications and services. The main programming language used will be C#. A good knowledge of software and solutions architecture is required here rather than knowledge and experience of any specific programming language.
Essential DutiesAs part of a development team work on the construction of new functionality within the database layers to meet business requirements. Manage and improve existing functionality, identify and fix any defects. Keep up to date with latest developments in the industry and ensure solutions remain compatible so that future database upgrades are possible.
Carry out database administrative tasks such as user maintenance, audit log reviews, change control reviews, data archiving, performance measuring and monitoring.
Carry out routine patching to keep up to date with security threats and maintain compliance with security standards and policies.
Work with the Software Development Team Lead to ensure initiatives are delivered on time and to client satisfaction.
Develop and modify applications and services using C#/.Net/.Net core. There will be opportunities to develop in other languages, such as C++, Delphi, PHP. The candidate will be expected to contribute where required.
All development must be carried out to existing coding standards.
The candidate will be expected to act as a mentor and project lead for some of the more junior members of the team.
- Design and develop logical and efficient solutions based on understanding objectives and requirements

- All aspects of database schema: tables. indexes, triggers, stored procedures and functions
- All aspects of SQL DML: select, insert, update, delete
- All aspects of SQL DDL: create, alter, drop, truncate
- All aspects of SQL TCL: begin transaction, commit, rollback, savepoint
- Experience or the willingness to learn MariaDB/ MySQL
- Experience in or the ability to learn to develop applications/service using Visual Studio on a Windows platform.
- Ability to understand high level requirements and expand on them
- Ability to work with a high level of responsibility and autonomy
- Flexibility in terms of working time with a priority on delivering critical business initiatives within agreed timeframes
