Recently re-founded, the Department of Engineering is rapidly expanding into a world-class research and teaching department. Research currently focuses on robotics, telecommunications and biomedical engineering, but we are looking to establish new research themes.
We offer both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, with a distinctive approach, combining both traditional teaching methods with modern, project-based learning, catering for the needs of our students and the industries in which they will work.
As a new department we have invested in new laboratories and maker space at the centre of the Strand campus in the heart of central London.
About the roleThe role is for a 0.8 FTE research assistant (RA) to work on a project, Semiconductor: Skills, Talent and Education Programme (STEP ), funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), in collaboration with UK Electronics Skills Foundation and Aston University. One of the targets in STEP is to enable materials graduates to further their understanding of semiconductor design and opto-electronics and support them to join semiconductor industries. The project aims to identify the skill gaps between materials degrees and job requirements in semiconductor industries.
The RA will work with Dr Tayebeh Mousavi to review current landscape of Materials science graduates in the semiconductor sectors through communicating (both in-person and online) with the relevant industries. The RA will analyse the current landscape of Materials Science in Higher Education (degree courses, program content and students). The RA will produce relevant reports summarising the analysis and the surveys.
This is a part time post (28 hours per week), and you will be offered an a fixed term contract until 31 March 2026.

Skill set requirements –
• Must have worked with pupils who are autistic and have previous experience of this
• Needs to be able to communicate in a variety of ways as 70% of our pupils are non-verbal e.g. can use Makaton, picture display symbols – we use PEC’s and PODD, have experience working with non -verbal pupils
• Have worked with pupils who display challenging behaviour but would have the will and desire to support pupils to manage their behaviour and also for you to work to understand the function of the behaviour
• Be flexible to work with pupils from 4 through to 11 years old
• Be able to think outside the box in regards to delivering lessons. We have lots of tools to help support this, but our pupils need a bespoke and accessible curriculum
• Have an awareness of autism strategies such as TEACCH, attention autism and use of PODD and be able to use these in practise
