Overview

This is a great opportunity, joining our existing project teams working and supporting our customers with Systems Engineering requirements. You will work with a consultative approach while building strong relationships with our customers as a team, communicating with stakeholders at a variety of seniority levels and provide a high standard of System Engineering.

The Marine Engineering Submarine (MESM) subject matter expert (SME) is responsible for gathering the technical data to support the courseware & media development programme. The MESM SME will have suitable Knowledge, Skills and Behaviour and will understand the technical data required, the sources of that data and how to access that data.

The Requirements Team SME's will work with the Courseware and Media Teams to identify technical data requirements for the development of Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT) courseware and media. Having identified the data requirements, the Requirements Team SME will work with the courseware and media content developers to contextualise training and language and ensure correct conditions and standards are applied to the training.

Responsibilities

Within this role you will be supporting a team of Systems Engineers and training team specialists working on Marine Simulation/Training Equipment.
  • Work as a member of the wider team responsible for the analysis, design, maintenance, review and production of DSAT Documentation & processes for our Customer's training sites and organisations.
  • Interviewing subject matter experts to collate required data, participate in internal workshops to discuss and agree findings from analysis.
  • Work with the customer and the customer's agents and suppliers to identify technical data required for courseware and media development and also external routes to obtain the data.
  • Work with the courseware and media content developers to contextualise training and language and ensure correct conditions and standards are applied to the training solution.
  • Conduct the upkeep, update and revalidation of course technical data.
  • Identify where training methods and media currently in use in the Customer may be exploited to better develop and deliver the Programme's courseware.
  • Be 'Responsible for championing and fostering a culture of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Any other duties required to complete the CMDC Training Service.

Qualifications

  • Foundation Degree in Engineering or similar scientific based qualification.

Essential skills

  • Proven at sea experience as a CAT A2 Nuclear watchkeeper.

Desired skills

  • Experience with training needs analysis
  • Experience as a trainer
  • Training Design

  • Minimum 10 years experience in MESM role
  • PWR 2.
  • Fwd ME duties.

The Marine Engineering Submarine (MESM) subject matter expert (SME) is responsible for gathering the technical data to support the PMS Operability team utilising their in-service on-board systems experience and through life support and maintenance planning experience.

You will be working within the systems engineering environment to create alerts and warnings where you will be required to utilise your broad platform knowledge and understanding to ensure platform management systems are integrated.

This role will be remote based with the expectation to travel to Barrow 2 to 3 times a month.

Responsibilities

Within this role you will be supporting a team of Systems Engineers working to deliver an integrated platform management system.
  • Being the point of contact with the customer (MoD and RN) on all aspects of PMS and integrated systems at a working level
  • Liaising with Rolls-Royce and Nuclear Propulsion MoD teams on integrating Platform Management System and DDMS at the Centralised Control Council
  • Working with Human Factors and Operability to develop the Human-Computer Interface and Consuls Solutions at the CCC, SCC and Electronic Damage Control Management System
  • Main Stakeholder in the production of the Warnings Management Solution for Whole Boat. This will involve multiple and ongoing workshops and document reviews
  • Liaising with MoD, Babcock, RN, ILS and many other organisations to develop the PMS and other complex systems through life support management arrangements
  • Assist in the delivery of Platform Management Systems and Emulators to allow trials to be conducted to prove the usability of PMS, AVS, CCC, SCC and Operational Documentation

Qualifications

  • Foundation Degree in Engineering or similar scientific based qualification.

Essential skills

  • Submarine experience at a Cat A or B Watchkeeping level, or equivalent experience possibly with MoD/Rolls-Royce
  • Experience in through-life support of Submarines
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to present to a large audience and produce documents to high standards

About the role

Ships and submarines represent some of the most complex manufactured assets in the world and as such provide interesting, challenging and rewarding work for the people that design, build and support them through life. As an Engineering Manager within our Marine Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in projects across the lifecycle of vessels for both our UK and international customers.

Within our submarine capability we are looking for a highly skilled and experienced technical leader from the submarine domain that can lead teams of engineers, act in a technical assurance capacity and help support the development of opportunities and our capability within the UK and beyond. With this in mind, we are after applicants that have served as submariners in the UK Royal Navy post-charge within the Mechanical/Marine Engineering specialism. We may consider applicants from a non-RN background although they will need to be highly technically competent with submarine Nuclear Propulsion and Mechanical systems and familiar with UK MoD submarine business practices and customers.

You will get involved in solving engineering challenges through leading the development and delivery of the Marine Engineering aspects of our projects. The projects will range from supporting our customers in delivering complex in-service change, delivery of feasibility studies, technical and design engineering investigations and analyses.

You will also have an opportunity to contribute to the delivery of projects across our wider portfolio, and a range of broader consulting projects within our other market areas.

Research and development is also at the heart of what we do and you will have the opportunity to drive and support (enhancing global understanding of submarine issues) the development of future submarine design concepts as well as the development of new capabilities, tools and processes.

There will be opportunities to work with the wider business functions support the development of opportunities and foster customer relationships.

The majority of people within the capability are based in the Bath and Bristol area, however, the capability is part of the UK and Europe region so a balance of in-office, remote and hybrid working will be considered (we also have offices in Glasgow, Plymouth and Fareham). Travel to other BMT offices and customer sites will be necessary as and when required (occasional overseas travel may be required).

About you

Candidates will be registered as a Chartered Engineer with an appropriate professional body.

You will have the ability to communicate and act with integrity with all levels of the business and customers, promoting a lessons learnt culture and contributing to business success though considered decision making and influencing the employee engagement agenda.
