Signalling and Telecommunications Technician

Location : Midland Metro Ltd, Wednesbury Depot, Potters Lane, WS10 0AR
Salary : £38,650 - £42,888 per annum (inclusive of on-call allowance), Depending on Experience + Excellent Benefits!
Contract : Permanent, Mon – Thu 0700 – 1500, Fri 0700 – 1400 – Flexible night working when required

We are now recruiting for a Signalling and Telecommunications Technician to undertake work with our S&T Infrastructure Team, ensuring the maintenance and repair tasks are performed with the utmost safety and effectiveness.

As our Signalling and Telecommunications Technician, you will assume responsibility for:

• Ensuring inspection and maintenance tasks are being completed in a timely manner and in compliance with the planned maintenance schedule
li>Ensuring the work tasks follow the correct procedures
• Conducting maintenance and repairs to the West Midland Metro signalling and telecommunications equipment
• Oversight of contractors carrying out planned works on the signalling and telecommunications equipment
• Assisting in test and commissioning of new systems
• Switching of electrical substations
• Involvement may be necessary when external contractors are required to conduct any planned works
• Continuous assessment and improvement of working practices embracing new technologies
• Flexibility to respond to emergency situations and unplanned repairs outside of normal working hours
• On Call duties
• Night shift work to perform maintenance and repair work as may reasonably be required by MML management

To be successful in this role, it is essential that you have:

• A good working knowledge and competence in electrical / mechanical systems.
• Recognised Electrical Qualification at Level 3 or above.
• Experience in the use of computer based diagnostic equipment.
• Demonstrable computer literacy and writing skills.
• The ability to read and understand electrical schematics.
• A full driving license.

It would be great if you had:

• City and Guilds 18th Edition
• City and Guilds Inspection and Periodic Inspection
• Any experience in fibre and data maintenance, repair and installation.

• Perform installations, configurations, and maintenance of telecommunications equipment, including routers, switches, modems, and associated cabling.
• Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues related to network connectivity and equipment functionality in the field.
• Conduct site surveys and assessments to determine optimal installation locations and requirements.
• Ensure all installations comply with company standards, industry best practices, and relevant safety regulations.
• Manage inventory of equipment and tools, ensuring accurate tracking and reporting.
• Provide technical support and guidance to customers during and after installation.
• Document all installation activities, troubleshooting steps, and resolutions accurately in the company's systems.
• Collaborate effectively with remote support teams and project managers to ensure seamless service delivery.
• Identify opportunities for service improvement and proactively report potential issues.
• Mentor and train junior technicians, sharing expertise and best practices.
• Adhere to all company policies and procedures, including safety protocols.

• Proven experience (5+ years) as a Field Installation Technician or similar role in the telecommunications or networking industry.
• Strong practical knowledge of network infrastructure, including fiber optic and copper cabling.
• Proficiency in installing, configuring, and troubleshooting common telecommunications hardware.
• Familiarity with networking protocols and standards.
• Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote field-based role.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Willingness to travel regularly to customer sites within a defined geographical area.
• A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are essential.
• Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CompTIA Network+, Fiber Optic Association) are advantageous.
• Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and documentation.

Our client, a leading independent Oil & Gas operator, based in Norwich are currently seeking a Network Technician to join their IT Department based in Norwich.

This is a full-time, permanent role based out of Norwich.

Frequent travel to UK Operational sites including offshore assets may be required in this role, you may be called on for out-of-hours business critical events and form part of an on-call rota.

This is an essential support position providing an active and practical resource providing support for 24/7 onshore and offshore operations for a UK Operator.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

• Cisco CCNA or higher
li>Proven experience as a Network Technician or similar role.
• Hands-on firewall, security and VoIP experience
• Strong practical network skills rooted in IP are essential
• Strong knowledge of network protocols, routing, and switching.
• Experience with network security practices and technologies.
• Proficiency in configuring and managing Cisco network devices.

Key Responsibilities Include:

• Assist in the design, implementation, and management of network infrastructure to ensure optimal performance and security.
• Manage and support a variety of systems, working daily to troubleshoot, monitoring your environment, installing, configuring, cabling and labelling, seeing jobs through from start to finish.
• Use the  IT Helpdesk system to receive requests and carry out troubleshooting and changes to the network in line with Group methodology.

• Monitor network performance and troubleshoot issues to ensure minimal downtime.
• Liaise with Group Network and IT department for 3rd line escalation.
• Liaise with WAN service providers for installations and issues.
• Ensuring assets are recorded correctly in our Equipment database.
• Testing and performing recovery.
• Comply with all relevant cybersecurity guidance and regulation.
• Maintain accurate documentation of network configurations, changes, and procedures.
• Supporting the offshore Telecoms team with equipment failures and replacement preparations.
• Liaise with Telecoms team regarding radio links between sites which carry the network.
• The role will work with and support members of the Group Network Team based in Paris and support from various UK sites.

• Proven experience working with high-voltage electrical systems (up to 33kV or higher).

• Relevant electrical qualifications (e.g. NVQ Level 3, HNC, or equivalent).
• High-voltage authorisation or the ability to obtain it quickly.
• A proactive approach to fault-finding and continuous improvement.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Willingness to participate in out-of-hours call-outs or standby rotas.
