About the Role:
We are hiring two System Engineers to join TEG's growing Technology department. In this role, you will be responsible for identifying and resolving issues in production and working with the wider engineering community to ensure we chase down and mitigate areas of risk.

Requirements
What does a day in the life look like?
- Proactively monitoring and managing our AWS/Cloud production environments and reacting swiftly to prevent or reduce customer visible impact
- Escalation and communication of production issues to key stakeholders
- Troubleshooting, reproducing, and mitigating complex system and infrastructure issues within the AWS environment
- Incident management of high severity issues impacting our sites and services 24x7
- Developing and implementing automation and tooling (e.g., leveraging CloudFormation, Ansible, or Terraform) in collaboration with the Site Reliability Engineering team to improve cloud management processes
- Working on the engineering team backlog
- Supporting service prior to go-live through pre-launch reviews
- Providing technical support for internal products, requiring strong investigation, analysis, and resolution skills
- Monitoring and checking of systems
- Execution of daily system operations tasks, including maintenance and optimisation of the cloud infrastructure
- Deployment, configuration, and management of cloud-native or updated solutions, utilizing Gitlab CICD
- As a member of our Technology team, you will be working closely with the Development team and business units to deliver a high level of support and service
About You
Essential experience & skills
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and investigative skills applied across diverse operating systems and networked environments
- Extensive experience operating and managing critical cloud infrastructure and production environments
- Experience of working in an agile environment to deliver software
- Knowledge and practical experience with scripting (including Shell scripting and Python) for automation and system management
- Experience working in a Microsoft stack environment including Windows Server Operating system, Internet Information Services (IIS), Active Directory (AD) and database servers such as Microsoft SQL Server.
- Operating knowledge of UNIX or Linux, including proficiency in Shell scripting and Python scripting for automated task scheduling and infrastructure management
- Demonstrated experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), specifically in managing core services (e.g., EC2, VPC, S3)
- Sound knowledge of basic networking such as IPs, TCP/IP and Firewall
- Proficient in quickly learning new technologies and ability to analyze business needs and recommend effective solutions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Desirable Experience & Skills
- Proven experience in Incident Management for high-severity issues, preferably within a large-scale production environment
- Experience working within GCP
- Experience utilizing CI/CD tools (such as Gitlab CICD or Jenkins) to streamline cloud deployments
- Experience managing or administering specialized databases, particularly cloud-native services like DynamoDB and Snowflake
- Experience working effectively in a demanding and fast-paced production environment
- Expertise with logging, monitoring, and Application Performance Monitoring (APM) tools used for proactive system health checks

About the Role

Our Senior Systems Engineers are considered technical leaders for their team and become subject matter experts in multiple services. They work efficiently and routinely deliver the right things with limited guidance. They use technology to solve complex problems. They are able to improve and/or drive improvements to these services and features for their team. They understand how their work impacts multiple teams. They are able to take a project, when the problem is not defined and deliver on schedule, applying appropriate technologies and industry systems-engineering best practices. They make effective implementation trade-off decisions and are able to assist others with trade-off decisions.
Our Senior Systems Engineers identify when implementations are not highly available, performant, secure, stable, maintainable, or have defects; and are able to determine short- and long-term mitigations. They have a depth and breadth of understanding in multiple areas of technology and they are excellent diagnosticians. They utilise their Linux expertise to troubleshoot, innovate fixes and workarounds, keep software up-to-date and provide data and metrics that help manage the capacity and efficiency of services.
Our Senior Systems Engineers are able to lead team design, scoping, and prioritization discussions. They understand how technical decisions impact their team, and other, teams' services and recommend opportunities and solutions for these problems. They optimize and/or automate team processes, ensuring they meet organisation goals. They lead implementation reviews (e.g., designs, code, operational readiness, deployment plans, system changes, etc.). They anticipate and mitigate patterns that affect the performance, reliability, or availability of their team(s) systems to create automation that simplifies workloads that scale operations.
Our Senior Systems Engineers drive SOP, documentation, and runbook creation, reviewing them for accuracy; they drive the use of best practices. They actively recruit and interview for their team and help others leverage their own expertise, by coaching and mentoring. They communicate clearly and collaborate with others to deliver results. They are self-starters, comfortable dealing with ambiguity and change. They are customer-obsessed, always looking to understand customer pain points and find resolutions quickly and completely.

Basic Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge in Linux system administration
- Significant experience of systems automation using BASH, Python, Perl, etc
- Significant experience of network fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, routing, switching, HTTP)
- Excellent troubleshooting skills at all levels, from application to network to host
- Experience writing technical documents, project plans and progress reports to leadership and to stakeholders

A member of the Systems Engineering function, this role ensures programme work is delivered on time, budget and to the required scope through robust plans. The Defence Systems Engineering Team provides support across the Defence Control Systems Account, helping drive the other functions through the Project Lifecycle from Customer needs definition to delivery

**Responsibilities:**
+ Support the planning and conduct of all Systems Engineering activities throughout the SE 'V' lifecycle, from concept through to delivery, for hardware and software development and In Service Support programmes

+ Prepare for and successfully deliver key design reviews (PDR/CDR) in accordance with the programme schedule
+ Technical engagement with suppliers, ensuring requirements and design baselines are maintained

+ Degree-qualified in a relevant engineering / technical subject (e.g. electrical engineering or similar)
