THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF 809 CONNECTED BUSINESSESnDigital and Innovation in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where creative and enterprising people put local residents and businesses first.nToday, Westminster is the most connected borough in London. But, when David joined us in the mid-2010s, small businesses were still struggling to get connected to fibre. Without gigabit-capable broadband, some companies even resorted to biking memory sticks around the city, simply to share files with clients.nAlthough still in a junior role, David took the initiative and successfully made the business case for .8 million of European funding to support connectivity for small businesses across Westminster. Feedback from businesses has been overwhelmingly positive as the project has enhanced their communications with clients. The new connectivity allows them to make video calls and work remotely. As the pandemic hit and many more people needed to work from home, it became clear just how vital this investment had been.nFast-forward a few years. Westminster is leading the way for connectivity, as a result of the project businesses are thriving, and David is heading up a service of his own responsible for delivery of the Smart City strategy.nThe Role:
As a User Interface Designer, you can make your own powerful contribution to people across Westminster. Joining our new Customer Experience Directorate, you’ll create visually stunning, user-centric digital interfaces for council products and services. Working alongside a wide range of colleagues and stakeholders, you’ll deliver functional and engaging user interface solutions that translate user needs and research insights into development-ready assets.nPrioritising accessibility, inclusivity and customer experience, you’ll support the delivery of fast, consistent and scalable digital services. Your day-to-day will be varied and dynamic, covering usability testing, wireframe development, UX improvements and ensuring brand consistency. You’ll put the needs of our users above anything, using your expertise to contribute to a culture of creativity, innovation and user satisfaction.nAn established professional with a proven track record of designing user interfaces for web and mobile platforms, ideally within complex or regulated environments, you’ll have experience across the full product lifecycle – from discovery to prototyping, testing to delivery.nWith strong visual design skills, and experience using Figma, Adobe CC Suite, Miro, Jira and Confluence, you’ll have a deep understanding of responsive design, interaction patterns and cross-device consistency. Knowledge of UX principles, user research methods and service design thinking is also key.nOn a personal level, you’ll be communicative, collaborative and curious, bringing an open mind and an analytical approach to everything you do. More than anything, you’ll be passionate about developing inclusive solutions that reflect the needs of our diverse communities. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a purpose-driven team putting Westminster residents first, and to supercharge your career in the process.nWestminster City Council is committed to supporting Care Leavers into the workplace.
