Our client, a distinguished engineering consultancy firm, is seeking a highly experienced Principal Electrical Design Engineer specializing in power distribution systems. This role is fully remote, allowing you to contribute to critical infrastructure projects from your home office. You will be responsible for leading the electrical design of complex power distribution networks for industrial, commercial, and utility clients. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of high voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) systems, substations, switchgear, protection schemes, and power system analysis. Responsibilities include conceptual design, detailed engineering, load flow studies, fault level calculations, protection coordination, and ensuring designs meet all relevant standards and regulations (e.g., BS 7671, ENA standards). You will utilize industry-standard design software such as ETAP, PSS/E, or similar. This role requires a strong technical leadership capacity, with the ability to manage design projects, mentor junior engineers, and liaise effectively with clients and other engineering disciplines. A Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or eligibility for it is highly desirable. The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in power system design. Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills are essential. You will play a key role in ensuring the reliable and efficient delivery of power to our clients' facilities. Our client, a prominent engineering consultancy specializing in infrastructure development, is seeking a highly competent Senior Electrical Design Engineer. This role is a fully remote position, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere in the UK. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and specification of electrical systems for a wide range of projects, including commercial, industrial, and public infrastructure. A strong background in low and high voltage power distribution systems, alongside proficiency in relevant design software, is essential. Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and specify electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, earthing, and standby power systems for various project types.
  • Develop detailed electrical drawings, schematics, and calculations using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit MEP).
  • Ensure designs comply with all relevant national and international standards, regulations, and codes (e.g., BS 7671, IET Wiring Regulations).
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, architects, and clients to define project requirements and design solutions.
  • Perform load calculations, cable sizing, circuit protection analysis, and fault level studies.
  • Prepare technical specifications, schedules of work, and Bills of Quantities.
  • Conduct site surveys and inspections to gather information and verify existing installations.
  • Review contractor submissions, shop drawings, and equipment submittals.
  • Provide technical support during the construction phase, including answering site queries and resolving design issues.
  • Undertake value engineering exercises to optimize designs and reduce project costs.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies, materials, and design methodologies in electrical engineering.
  • Mentor and guide junior electrical engineers and technicians.
  • Prepare technical reports and documentation.
  • Ensure designs are energy-efficient and sustainable.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in electrical design, with a strong focus on power distribution systems.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit MEP, and other relevant electrical design software.
  • In-depth knowledge of electrical design principles, power systems, and building services.
  • Thorough understanding of BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and other relevant industry standards.
  • Experience in designing for various sectors, including commercial, industrial, and healthcare, is desirable.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within a remote team.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it is highly advantageous.
  • Experience with renewable energy integration or smart grid technologies is a plus.
