In this role, you’ll take full ownership of one of the company’s core product ranges, guiding it through its entire lifecycle—from concept and innovation to quality, support, and cost optimisation.
Key Purpose of the Role The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Managing a core product range throughout its lifecycle.
- Driving product innovation and ensuring industry-leading performance, quality, and value.
- Supporting cross-functional teams including production, customer service, and procurement.
- Identifying and implementing cost-saving and value engineering opportunities.
- Stay current with advancements in UHV (Ultra High Vacuum) design and manufacturing technologies.
- Benchmark competitor products through reverse engineering to maintain a competitive edge.
- Manage and deliver development projects on time and within budget.
- Promote and apply best practices in Design for Manufacture (DFM).
- Conduct feasibility studies on new product introductions (NPIs).
- Create and review detailed drawings in accordance with BS 888 standards.
- Collaborate with new and existing suppliers for product development.
- Generate CAD BOMs and ensure accurate data dissemination across stakeholders.
- Carry out FMEA and prototype assembly/testing.
- Identify areas for product and process improvement.
- Lead 8D problem-solving and root cause analysis initiatives.
- Maintain accurate and current product data and documentation.
- Support operations with up-to-date CAD BOMs and comprehensive work instructions.
- Lead value engineering efforts to reduce costs while maintaining quality and functionality.
- Contribute to in/out-sourcing projects in collaboration with purchasing and manufacturing teams.
- Execute engineering changes promptly and systematically.
- Ensure all product documentation and BOMs reflect current specifications.
- Provide technical support for custom quotations and inquiries.
- Deliver engineering packs for custom orders on time and within budget.
- Strong understanding of DFMA principles.
- Experience in root cause analysis and product engineering of assemblies/components.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Project costing and quotation experience.
- Ability to read and produce technical drawings using modern 3D CAD systems.
- 3–5 years’ experience in a similar role.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics.
- Proficiency in PTC Creo 5 (or higher).
- Hands-on experience with mechanical assembly and machining (milling/turning).
- HNC/HND in Mechanical and Production Engineering
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Strong communication skills across all levels of engineering and production.
- Self-motivated with excellent time management.
- Practical, hands-on approach with a strong sense of ownership.

I am currently recruiting for a Lead Product Design Engineer to work for a leading engineering organisation based in West Sussex. Salary up to 75,000 + Benefits.
The organisation are worldwide leaders in the design, development and manufacture of their incredibly high-end products. They work out of their state-of-the-art offices fully equipped with showrooms enabling them to present their products to their clientele highlighting why they're above and beyond their competitors. They've grown astronomically in recent years and projections suggests this shall continue in line with the ever growing demand and desire for their products.
To support the growth of the business they now have the need to appoint a Lead Product Design Engineer on a permanent basis.
In this role as a Lead Product Design Engineer, you will be responsible for leading a team of 4 other Product Design Engineers, as well as some sub-contractors and offshore resources as and when required. This will be a hands-on role with 75% of your time spent designing, with the other 25% of your time spent around leadership duties such as project managing, process improvements, delegation, mentoring, managing and training. You will be expected to challenge where applicable, understanding why things have been done a certain way to date and then suggesting alternative ways of doing things better, whether that's new manufacturing methods, improved design procedures or utilising new suppliers. This will be a combination of new product development (NPD) as well as supporting the existing product portfolio making the necessary modifications and alterations whilst considering product rationalisation. A large focus will be placed on process improvement and optimisation with regards to the design department.
Essential Requirements:
- Previous experience as a Product Design Engineer, Industrial Design Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer or similar
- Previous experience mentoring, leading or managing other Design Engineers
- 3D CAD
- Experience designing for some or all of the following manufacturing methods CNC Machining, Casting, Forging or Extrusion
- Experience designing products where aesthetics and ergonomics are at the forefront of any design considerations
