We have an exciting new opportunity as a Engineering Design Business Lead (This role could also been known as Technical Director, Regional Director or Framework Director). Directing a design function undertaking feasibility, outline and where appropriate, detailed designs for capital solutions that will enable Severn Trent to successfully deliver over £6bn of investments in the next five years. With an eye on the future, it’s safe to say that we don’t sit still, so your team will also be supporting the development of the overall portfolio strategies for future investments plans.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Reporting directly into the Head of Design, you’ll have 6-9 direct reports, c.40-70 people directly employed in your team and additional framework services provided by several design houses and consultancies. We are seeking a dedicated individual to develop and nurture a highly engaged, high performing team and to take personal responsibility for ensuring that we and our external business partners deliver innovative, high-quality, efficient designs within our Capital Delivery works programme. The ideal candidate will ensure that these designs:
- Align with our strategic goals to achieve carbon neutrality.

Are you a seasoned Engineering Leader with a strong Mechanical background in the water and wastewater sector? Due to progression within our teams, continued success building on our existing framework agreements and a confident growth plan in AMP 8 and AMP 9, across all 10 major water and wastewater companies in England and Wales, we are seeking a driven, confident, innovative professional to lead and develop our mechanically biased design team, and support other engineering discipline managers, in the delivery of complex infrastructure projects.

The Role
- Lead, develop, and grow our mechanically biased design teams to meet the needs of our expanding workload and capability.
- Oversee project delivery from outline scope, detailed design and fabrication level design phases, whilst offering construction and installation support.
- Support the development of detailed specifications for survey requirements, equipment, systems and interfaces between disciplines, ensuring they meet client requirements and industry standards.
- Ensure all design deliverables are assigned, planned, and delivered as required by the need of the business and contract.
- Innovate, challenge, and consider continuous improvement across projects and designs
- Support the addressing of challenges encountered across our teams, bringing your unique experience to assist in defining solutions.
- Liaison with other discipline leads, project managers and commercial teams.
- Attending site, both during and after projects to offer your knowledge and experience, and to receive feedback from our valued teams and clients.
- Develop and build strong customer and supply chain relationships.
This role is available in our Bath (Midsomer Norton Head Office).
Hybrid working could be considered based on location, however, working from our office for a minimum of 3 days per week.

Experience
- Very strong Mechanical design engineering experience on small to medium-sized projects.
- Working in UK Water and/or Waste Water industries, or similar engineering schemes.
- Managing, developing and coaching multi-disciplined design teams.
- CAD based design systems, structural analysis, CDE systems, and planning tools.
- Design project management and financial reporting.
- Working from project specifications, statements of need, own developed scopes and legislation.
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent in Civil and/or Mechanical Engineering.

What you’ll be doing:
- Acting as the SSN AUKUS Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Integrated Product Support (IPS)
- Providing proactive guidance and input to the Integrated Delivery Team (IDT) regarding any through-life implications of decisions made as the design matures
- Ensuring the 6 IPS elements led by BAE Systems are considered in the Design Interface and any artefacts as that are created
- Working with the design teams assessing maturity against the supportability principles acting as the key point of contact between the design teams and the support SME’s
- Monitoring opportunities and inclusion of the relevant LFE to be prosecuted by the IDTs
- Providing a continual, accessible presence within the Design Delivery pillar and Support Integrator on the SSN AUKUS floor plates
- Providing liaison from the SSN AUKUS Programme to the Support Engineering specialists and Transversal SMEs
- Responding to requests for bespoke and specific work requiring IPS SME input
Your skills and experiences:
Essential:
- Cat A / B qualified nuclear submarine operator / maintainer
- STEM Degree or equivalent qualification
- Obtained or working towards obtaining relevant Professional Registration (IEng)
Desirable:
- Knowledge of the complete engineering lifecycle and how support activities align to it, with some experience of operating in a number of lifecycle phases
