The Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI) is an international volunteers-led think tank supporting and advocating the application of blockchain technology in the global fight against climate change.

We are seeking a passionate professional with a strong methodological approach to their work, who specializes in standards development. In this role, you will focus on creating and promoting blockchain standards, engaging with key stakeholders, and establishing strategic standards-based partnerships to further BCI’s core mission. You will drive the end-to-end process of developing standards, provide support to working groups, publish standards-related research, and produce briefing materials for presentations at conferences and client engagements. Your efforts will directly contribute to shaping global climate policy through the establishment and adoption of robust standards. 

Responsibilities:

    • Providing standards development support for members of working groups in areas such as renewable energy, carbon trading, forest monitoring, natural resource management, blockchain technology, artificial intelligence, etc.;
    • Conducting primary and secondary research activities, including both quantitative and qualitative analysis, and publishing high-quality research that informs and advances the development of standards;
    • Generating opportunities for strategic partnerships that align with and promote the adoption of standards in climate and blockchain initiatives;
    • Attending conferences and events to promote BCI’s standards work, communicate research findings and insights via presentations, and engage with key stakeholders. 

Requirements

Education & Training

    • A relevant degree or training in relevant discipline preferred; and 
    • Experience in producing standards-based outputs and structured reports for different audiences.  

Relevant Experience

    • Proven track record in research publications and standards involvement; 
    • Experience in building constructive relationships with stakeholders;  
    • Experience of working independently and with teams to drive forward projects using own initiative; and 
    • Experience in designing, planning and facilitating independent research and the ability to meet tight deadlines. 

Skills & Abilities

    • Excellent oral communication skills, including the ability to develop effective working relationships, work flexibly across professional and operational boundaries, and communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders at all levels; 
    • Excellent English writing skills and detail orientated; 
    • Excellent organisational skills and ability to balance competing demands under pressure;  
    • Strong presentation skills and ability to present ideas appropriately and persuasively; and 
    • Aptitude in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish (desirable).  

General & Specialist Knowledge

    • Strong depth of knowledge on topics central to the BCI such as climate change, climate finance, blockchain technology and artificial intelligence preferred;
    • Depth of knowledge regarding the standards domain;
    • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic Chief Operating Officer / Assistant Director-General to join our Executive leadership team (based remotely). The ideal candidate is driven and experienced, and looking to make a difference in international climate change governance.

The successful candidate will support the Director-General and head up the Human Capital & Administration Division to discharge relevant operational management duties. With the support of Principal Executive Officers leading two branches (IT & Recruitment), your main responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating the operations of the volunteers' recruitment branch and IT support branch;
  • Drafting and preparing all relevant internal policy documents;
  • Developing and implementing operational policies and procedures under the instruction of the Director-General;
  • Managing personnel matters among volunteers; and
  • Managing other ad-hoc administrative activities, and project requirements as needed, etc.

Requirements

Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent English writing skills, including the ability to develop effective working relationships, work flexibly across professional and operational boundaries, and communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders at all levels;
  • Proven ability to effectively multitask and prioritise work;
  • Excellent problem-solving skills;
  • The ability to follow instructions, respect authority and excellent reporting skills is a must; and
  • Excellent attention to detail and proactive attitude is an indispensable skills required for this role

General & Specialist Knowledge

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office; and
  • Some knowledge on topics central to the BCI such as climate change, climate finance and blockchain technology preferred.

Education & Training 

  • Educated to degree level (second degree and/or professional qualification preferable, but not essential)

Relevant Experience

  • At least five years of experience working in a similar role is essential, preferably acquired in a not-for-profit environment, the experience can be varied;
  • Excellent use of Microsoft Office package, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint is essential to perform in this role.
  • Experience in building constructive relationships with stakeholders; and
  • Experience in working independently and with teams to drive forward projects using own initiative.

You will be working with our Employability team to facilitate successful opportunities for volunteers and work experience placements across the business, including supporting them into employment and training. The role will require you to safely recruit and support volunteers and work experience placements, record and collate performance information, and create opportunities across the whole company. 

We are looking for an organised, self-motivated person who is passionate about making a difference to people’s lives and communities. The successful person will promote and embed our volunteer/work experience offer across the whole organisation, with a positive attitude and the ability to work on your own initiative. 

You will report directly to Maria Taylor, our Apprentice and Volunteer Team Leader, and the job role location is Redcar and Scarborough, with an expectation for you to work across all of our sites. In addition, we offer agile working based on business need, which means we trust you to get the job done and work from wherever you choose, having the flexibility to fit in your personal commitments too.
