**About You**
You will be degree qualified in science, mathematics, or engineering, with experience in the water industry. Ideally, you will be working towards or have achieved chartered membership of a relevant professional institution.
You will have some experience in the usage of water quality modelling software (e.g. MIKE, Delft3D, SAGIS-SIMCAT) with demonstrable application in inland and / or coastal systems. This could be in the form of the modelling of physico-chemical, biological, bacterial, or chemical parameters.
A background or understanding of the regulated water industry and/or catchment and nature-based solutions is advantageous. You will also have the necessary skills and experience to liaise with a broad range of stakeholders, working closely with clients and other technical staff across multidisciplinary business groups.

An opportunity has arisen for a Water Quality Risk Scientist to join the Regional Quality Team.

Reporting to the Water Quality Risk Manager, working closely with the wider business, you'll be responsible for ensuring that risks to water quality are investigated and effectively and efficiently managed. You'll also provide strategic operational risk analysis, assessment and risk management to the business. 

Responsibilities will also include: 

  • Identifying and utilising all water quality risk analysis tools from across the business. 

  • Undertaking strategic risk assessments and maintaining drinking water safety plans (DWSP).

  • Providing scientific input into the development of maintenance programmes. 

  • Developing short- and medium-term strategies to reduce risks to water quality. 

  • Scientific input into operational Impact plans. 

  • Providing expertise and advice for Regulation 31 compliance. 

  • Monitoring pesticide levels aiding effective Abstraction Management decisions.

**About You**

+ A good understanding of numerical modelling equations and discretisation, 2D mesh generation
+ Experience using numerical modelling software such as MIKE, Delft3D, and Telemac, with proven applications in relevant fields. This experience might include modelling hydrodynamics, multiphase flows, particle tracking, advection dispersion, water quality, and chemical processes.

The individual:
  • We are looking for someone flexible, prepared to take on new challenges and help set the direction in our water quality modelling projects.
  • Industry-leading experience in coastal water quality modelling is essential, with expertise in industry standard software packages such as DHI and Delft.
  • You will have a degree or higher in an environmental or science subject; you will ideally be chartered.
  • You will have expert numerical and data analysis skills and be able to write in a compelling and engaging way to communicate complex ideas to a wide audience.
  • You will have an expert knowledge of environmental water quality regulation; for example the Water Framework Directive, Bathing Water Directive, Storm Overflow Assessment Framework (SOAF) and the Urban Waste Water Treatment Regulations (UWWTR).
  • You will have an ability to develop innovative industry-leading approaches in new technical areas and in data-poor environments to support clients in decision-making.
  • You will be highly self-motivated, possessing strong enthusiasm, commitment to delivering sustainable outcomes and focussed on delivering technical excellence.
  • You will be someone able to inspire others in a team.
  • A skilled collaborative worker, you will have great interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively with different teams, clients, and stakeholders.
  • You will be well-organised, able to plan ahead and deal with multiple projects running in parallel.
