Role Overview

The Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI) is seeking a volunteer Web Designer to help reimagine how we present our work to the world. This role focuses on visual storytelling, user experience, and content layout — with an emphasis on mobile-friendly, accessible design and strategic communication.

You’ll work closely with BCI’s Communications team to design high-impact webpages that support international events, research publications, blog features, and campaigns. This is a design-forward role. You won’t be expected to code, but you’ll be responsible for owning the visual direction of the site in close coordination with developers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design new modules and layouts for BCI’s WordPress-based website

  • Create dynamic, visually compelling pages for events, campaigns, and announcements

  • Develop wireframes and mockups in alignment with communications goals

  • Ensure consistency in style, typography, and tone across web content

  • Work with developers to bring your designs to life and troubleshoot visual issues

  • Propose design improvements that enhance accessibility, responsiveness, and visual clarity

  • Participate in briefings with the Head of Communications and editorial team to align visual narratives with strategic messaging

Requirements

Experience & Skills

  • Strong portfolio of web design projects, preferably in nonprofit or policy settings

  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Canva Pro

  • Solid understanding of UI/UX principles and mobile-first design

  • Ability to interpret a comms brief and turn it into an engaging visual experience

  • Strong attention to layout, detail, and branding consistency

  • Experience working with content management systems (WordPress preferred)

  • Collaborative attitude with the ability to take direction while contributing original ideas

Benefits

What difference will you make?

BCI is an expert-led platform that helps governments, inter-governmental and regional organisations as well as relevant corporations, negotiate the complex landscape of emerging technologies for environmental good. We research, identify and analyse the applications of emerging technologies so that informed decisions can be made by leading stakeholders in the global climate change and action network.

The BCI Communications team aims to tell the BCI story and our role in driving innovation to mitigate climate change and create a cleaner and greener future. As a think-tank and advocacy group for such a major issue, we understand the importance of being a credible expert and advisor which is why it is essential to demonstrate our research-driven approach to the relevant stakeholders.

What You’ll Gain

  • Ownership of BCI’s digital interface to the world

  • A portfolio of work tied to global policy, sustainability, and emerging tech
