  • Location: Wallington (office-based, with the option to go hybrid after 2 months)

  • Hours: Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm
  • Pay Rate : 15 - 20 per hour (depending on experience)

We're looking for a detail-oriented Data Reporting Assistant to join a small data team on a 6-month contract. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with good knowledge of Excel skills and a keen eye for accuracy to make an immediate impact in a fast-paced environment.


What you'll be doing

  • Producing accurate and well-formatted reports for both operational (BAU) and ad-hoc needs.
  • Validating and cleaning data to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Using Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, Conditional Formatting, Charting) to analyse and present data.
  • Translating vague requests into clear, actionable reporting outputs.
  • Identifying anomalies or trends in the data and highlighting meaningful insights.
  • Communicating findings in a clear, professional way to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Handling sensitive datasets with confidentiality and professionalism.

What we're looking for

  • Excel proficiency (intermediate level or above is essential).
  • Comfortable working with large datasets (preferred but not essential).
  • Experience with SQL database reporting tools is an advantage but not required.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality reporting.
  • Clear communication skills and the confidence to explain insights simply.
  • Professionalism and respect for the sensitivity of data.

We are seeking an experienced Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) with deep subject-matter expertise in data processing and reporting. In this role, you will own the reliability, performance, and operational excellence of our real-time and batch data pipelines built on AWS, Apache Flink, Kafka, and Python. You’ll act as the first line of defense for data-related incidents , rapidly diagnose root causes, and implement resilient solutions that keep critical reporting systems up and running.

Incident Management & Triage

  • Serve as on-call escalation for data pipeline incidents, including real-time stream failures and batch job errors.
  • Rapidly analyze logs, metrics, and trace data to pinpoint failure points across AWS, Flink, Kafka, and Python layers.
  • Lead post-incident reviews: identify root causes, document findings, and drive corrective actions to closure.

Reliability & Monitoring

  • Design, implement, and maintain robust observability for data pipelines: dashboards, alerts, distributed tracing.
  • Define SLOs/SLIs for data freshness, throughput, and error rates; continuously monitor and optimize.
  • Automate capacity planning, scaling policies, and disaster-recovery drills for stream and batch environments.

Architecture & Automation

  • Collaborate with data engineering and product teams to architect scalable, fault-tolerant pipelines using AWS services (e.g., Step Functions , EMR , Lambda , Redshift ) integrated with Apache Flink and Kafka .
  • Troubleshoot & Maintain Python -based applications.

Performance Optimization

  • Profile and tune streaming jobs: optimize checkpoint intervals, state backends, and parallelism settings in Flink.
  • Analyze Kafka cluster health: tune broker configurations, partition strategies, and retention policies to meet SLAs.
  • Leverage Python profiling and vectorized libraries to streamline batch analytics and report generation.

Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing

  • Act as SME for data & reporting stack: mentor peers, lead brown-bag sessions on best practices.

The Opportunity

As the People Data & Reporting Manager at Goldsmiths, University of London, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the university’s approach to people data and HR reporting. Leading a dedicated team, you’ll be responsible for developing and maintaining robust HR systems and delivering high-quality data insights that drive decision-making across the institution. This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across HR, IT, and the wider university, ensuring our systems and processes are innovative, secure, and aligned with Goldsmiths’ strategic goals and values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the People Data & Reporting team, ensuring the delivery of effective HR systems and high-quality datasets.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of HR software solutions that enhance the staff experience and support organisational objectives.
  • Act as the university’s People information asset manager, ensuring the integrity, security, and quality of HR data.
  • Prepare statutory and operational reports, including HESA, Gender Pay, Equal Pay, Race Equality, and Student Staff Ratios.
  • Provide accurate data analytics to inform workforce planning, organisational design, and university-wide projects.
  • Collaborate with HR and IT colleagues to integrate management information into regular reporting and develop key performance metrics.
  • Manage system changes and upgrades, ensuring clear planning, communication, and documentation.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that support inclusive and effective HR systems.
  • Promote equal opportunities and contribute to university-wide data governance initiatives.
  • Undertake other duties as required, in line with the scope of the role.

About You and what you will bring to the role

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent), with evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Significant experience in systems management within a large, complex organisation—ideally in higher education.
  • Proven leadership skills, with the ability to coach, influence, and support a team.
  • Experience managing and developing HR/Payroll systems such as Unit4 Business World (or equivalent).
  • Strong project management skills, including experience implementing new system functionality and engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office 365 (including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and SharePoint).
  • Skilled in using database reporting tools (such as Power BI) to extract, analyse, and interpret data for complex reports and briefings.
  • Commitment to professional development and an informed interest in higher education.
