Purpose of the Role
The Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering will be responsible for planning, delivering, assessing, and supporting high-quality teaching and learning within the Mechanical Engineering programmes. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development and ensure an outstanding student experience, while supporting learners in achieving their academic and personal goals.
Key Responsibilities
The role involves planning and delivering effective teaching across a range of Mechanical Engineering programmes. This includes the development of lesson plans, schemes of work, and assessment materials, and conducting assessments using appropriate methods. You will be required to set individual targets for students, guide them through the learning process, and support their progression through action planning and review.
In addition to teaching, you will maintain accurate records of students’ progress, achievement, attendance, and retention using electronic systems. Promoting and monitoring high levels of student attendance and following up with non-attenders as required will be an integral part of the role.
The Lecturer will act as a personal tutor for learners, providing academic and pastoral support. For students requiring additional learning support, you will collaborate with Learning Support Assistants to ensure appropriate interventions and adjustments are made.
Contributing to curriculum planning and development through team meetings, course reviews, and evaluations is also key. You will actively participate in quality assurance processes, including internal verification, course assessment, and self-assessment. You will also promote the use of Information Learning Technology (ILT) to enhance learning experiences and ensure that all learners receive a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
The Lecturer may be required to undertake Course or Subject Leader duties, depending on the needs of the department. You will also support recruitment and enrolment activities, offer guidance to prospective students, and participate in promotional events such as open evenings and parent/carer meetings.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, you will maintain strong relationships with employers, support services, and other staff members to ensure student success. Person Specification
Qualifications
Candidates must have a Level 5 qualification or higher in Mechanical Engineering, along with a recognised teaching qualification (minimum Level 3). A GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above is required, or the willingness to achieve these qualifications.
An Assessor/Internal Verifier qualification is desirable, or the willingness to work towards this within an agreed timescale. A Level 2 Equality & Diversity qualification and Safeguarding training (or willingness to obtain) are essential.
Knowledge & Experience
The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of current developments in Further Education (FE) and adult curriculum, as well as the ability to apply effective teaching strategies in an FE setting. A track record of success in teaching and assessing BTEC/EAL qualifications in Mechanical Engineering is essential. Practical experience in the engineering industry, particularly in machining, is desirable.
Experience with planning, delivering, and assessing FE programmes, as well as familiarity with quality assurance and continuous improvement processes, will be key to this role. You should also be comfortable using electronic systems for attendance tracking, assessments, and reporting.

The successful candidate will be expected to adhere to safeguarding policies, promote the welfare of children and vulnerable adults, and actively support the Prevent agenda. You will also be required to embed equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of teaching and learning.

Roles and Responsibilities:
As Engineering Supervisor, you'll be responsible for the day-to-day management, technical oversight, and performance of our multi-skilled engineering team. You'll ensure the delivery of high-quality maintenance services, strict adherence to all regulations, and seamless operational support. Your responsibilities will include:
Directly supervise, motivate, and develop a team of multi-skilled engineers. You'll plan, schedule, and allocate daily tasks, PPMs, and reactive work orders, ensuring efficient resource use and timely completion. You'll also manage team rosters and foster a culture of continuous professional development and safety.
Provide expert hands-on electrical fault-finding, diagnostics, and rectification for complex building systems. This includes power distribution, lighting, fire alarms, control panels, motors, and associated M&E plant. You'll be the go-to electrical authority for your site.
Oversee the maintenance and operation of critical infrastructure, such as Uninterruptible Power Supplies, generators, large chillers and cooling towers. Your experience with such equipment will be highly beneficial in maintaining their resilience.
Compliance, Health & Safety: Ensure strict adherence to all relevant statutory regulations, and company health and safety policies. You'll actively manage Permit-to-Work procedures, Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), and ensure accurate Risk Assessments and Method Statements are in place.
Conduct regular quality inspections of completed works by both in-house staff and subcontractors, ensuring adherence to specifications and industry best practices.
Ensure accurate and timely completion of all maintenance documentation within Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) systems or site logbooks. You'll generate comprehensive reports on team performance, asset status, and compliance.
Stakeholder Liaison: Liaise effectively with clients, building occupants, and other contractors, providing professional updates and ensuring minimal disruption.
What We're Looking For
Electrical Qualifications: Hold a recognised degree or NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation/Engineering or equivalent, with current 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations.
Supervisory Experience: Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in a supervisory or senior engineer role within the building services or facilities management sector, managing multi-skilled teams.
Critical Equipment Background: Prior experience in maintaining and operating critical equipment such as UPS systems, generators, or within data centre environments is highly beneficial.
Technical Acumen: Strong diagnostic and hands-on fault-finding skills across a broad range of electrical and general M&E building services.
Health & Safety: Excellent understanding and practical application of UK Health & Safety legislation. IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate is highly desirable.
IT Proficiency: Competent in using CAFM systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
