Job Title: Principal Electrical Power Engineer

Location: Barrow-in-Furness or Filton – Hybrid – (Barrow – 2 days a fortnight onsite; 1 day a week onsite at Filton) depending on business needs

Salary: Up to £55k (commensurate with skills and experience)

What you’ll be doing:

• Functional design and definition of Electrical Power Systems equipment
• Authoring and reviewing technical documentation
• Managing associated technical risks, assumptions and dependencies
• Providing advice on electrical power technical aspects across a broad range of engineering disciplines
• Engaging with customers and suppliers to provide solutions to complex problems
• Taking a leading role by guiding more junior members of the team through the systems definition process

Your skills and experiences:

Essential

• Degree qualified Electrical Engineering or equivalent Engineering experience
• Engineering Chartership required (or significant progress towards Chartership can be demonstrated)
• Significant knowledge of AC and DC electrical power systems
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills

Electrical Power Systems Definition team:

Working on the UK’s next-generation SSN design that incorporates technology from the UK, Australia and the United States you will be part of the Electrical Power team responsible for defining the needs of equipment, defining the system elements required to feed into the submarine design and build process, including design documentation, spatial modelling and build outputs. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

In this apprenticeship, you will follow a Process Engineering pathway, learning the science behind how we make sugar by operating and monitoring our chemical manufacturing process on an industrial scale. You will also assist in the installation operation, planned preventative maintenance and repair of machinery such as pumps, scrolls, conveyors and compressors.

A 30-month learning programme, following the Science Manufacturing Technician Standard, achieving a Level 3 Process Technology qualification and all the practical experience alongside, to be ready to move into a Process Technician role. Let's be honest. Engineering in food manufacturing isn't glamorous. It's noisy, it's fast-paced, things break when you least want them to, and half the battle is fixing kit that really doesn't care about your weekend plans.
If that still excites you rather than puts you off - keep reading.
We're after an Engineering Shift Leader who can keep a cool head when production goes sideways, make smart decisions on the spot, and get the best out of a team of engineers (including apprentices who need a nudge in the right direction now and then).
You'll be juggling planned maintenance with reactive breakdowns, driving improvements where you can, and reporting on KPIs that actually mean something (downtime, labour hours, spend).
What you'll need:

• Engineering background in FMCG (ideally food, because it's its own beast).
• NVQ Level 3 or above is a must.
• Solid mechanical and electrical know-how.
• Experience leading a shift team without losing your sanity.
• HACCP Level 2 and TPM knowledge would be handy, but not a dealbreaker.
