Job Title: Research & Development Manager - Consumer Technical Insights & Product Claims
Location: Leeds, UK
BACKGROUND
The Deodorants category is a key part of the Unilever Personal Care Business Group. With a family of Power Brands - Rexona /Sure , Dove, Axe - which are critical growth drivers of the company. This role will be the key Consumer Technical Insights ( CTI ) & Claims partner of the R&D Head of Rexona Innovation & Antiperspirant Technology Platform benefit platform.
The role holder will be responsible for leading consumer research claims support for our Rexona /Sure Brand, maximising our technology through compelling claims, brought to life through outstanding activations ( e.g. , demos) - all with appropriate claims support, including executing technical, human panel, clinical or consumer testing. The role holder will also be responsible for bringing new insight to support Rexona innovatio n and future technology development .
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
The main responsibilities and accountabilities of the role are:
+ Deliver y of all consumer insight & testing needs for Rexona /Sure innovation projects - this may entail designing C onsumer Insight plans, validating consumer perceivable differences in new technologies & new research to unlock new insights on benefit/formats which may lead to new ideas , concepts or projects .
+ Leading the consumer testing programme for Rexona/Sure in key lead markets ensuring product performance is better than key competitors. Ensuring test design & data quality follows best practice outlined by CTI capability.
+ Lead the planning & execution of the technical claims programme for a portfolio of global Rexona /Sure projects using a range of tools to maximise the product story, in order to bring innovation to life for consumers, creating the maximum amount of news from our science and innovation. Through kitchen science demonstrations all the way through crafting animatic and mode of action videos to bring the science to life digitally .
+ Delivery of claims substantiation and defence strategies, delivering outstanding communications for our innovations that are robustly supported with technical and consumer evidence - with full alignment of critical business partners ( eg marketing, legal, regulatory).
+ S upport competitor challenge activities by provid ing guidance, leadership and R&D points of view on competitor claims challenges inbound and outbound.
+ Lead consumer insights to inform and underpin programme of work being led from Antiperspirant Technology Platform through to the brand. This may entail leading strategic initiatives, informing, developing & refining work on 'growth spaces' relevant to Rexona /Sure . Be resident expert on Sweat consumer insight to provide general support on unanswered consumer questions.
+ In partnership with CTI Capability & Clinicals team, ensure the appropriate protocols & methodologies are developed to validate a spectrum of antiperspirant technologies.
+ Be a key member of Claims & CTI C ommunity of Practice to drive consistency, best practice & sharing of learnings & know-how . Driving skills & talent development of your Claims & CTI Team.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
+ Prefer red experience in Beauty & Personal Care categories with knowledge of category & consumer fundamentals
+ Must have understanding of sensory/clinical/consumer research (quantitative & qualitative) , and an appreciation for the fundamental requirements for claims substantiation in FMCG
+ A consumer first mindset, a track record of bringing insight to the heart of brands & innovation s, to help teams craft compelling mixes
+ A creative thinker, with the ability to inspire ideas from insights and spot opportunities for superior claims to out perform our competition
+ A bility to form excellent partnerships with internal ( e.g., marketing, legal) & external partners ( e.g., agencies).

Ultimately Border to Coast is an investment business and its success is determined by the investment performance we generate for our Partner Funds

The role – what you’ll be doing

This role offers the opportunity to collaborate on security selection, portfolio construction, and investment strategy. You’ll work closely with key stakeholders including Fixed Income Portfolio Managers, Portfolio Risk, the Responsible Investment team and Equity Research colleagues to:

  • Conduct fundamental credit research and on-going monitoring of portfolio exposures in sectors under your coverage. Issuers are predominantly investment grade developed market entities although there may be a small number of high yield and/or emerging market exposures.
  • li>Assess the relative value of new investment opportunities and effectively communicate recommendations for inclusion in relevant portfolios.
  • Contribute your sector expertise to the overall investment strategy:
    - Monitor industry conditions and trends assessing their impact on the credit quality of issuers under coverage
    - Share insight and subject matter expertise to enhance the capability of others and develop our investment culture.
    - Collaborate with Research and Portfolio Management colleagues to highlight macro factors and market dynamics that may impact investment strategy across other sectors and portfolios.
    - Play an active role in constructively and respectfully challenging the information, analysis and logic supporting the recommendations of research team colleagues and investment approach of PMs.
  • Actively participate in investment team meetings, company meetings, and conferences.
  • Work closely with Responsible Investment colleagues to implement the Border to Coast Responsible Investment policies e.g. confirming that labelled bond’s use of proceeds aligns with ICMA principles, evaluating second party opinions, assessing project impact and supporting engagement where appropriate.

We are seeking investment professionals with curiosity and a passion for financial markets. The ideal candidate will have relevant credit research experience (banking, private credit, sell-side, buy-side or rating agency). In addition, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Willingness to collaborate with and learn from others to develop investment ideas, refine processes, and share constructive feedback.
  • Ability to distil a wide range of often conflicting information in a concise and cohesive manner.
  • Willingness to take risk when making recommendations and to have your investment thesis respectfully challenged.
  • The ability to recognise when unexpected developments require your recommendation to change.
  • Sound knowledge of Responsible Investment principles and of the characteristics of labelled bonds, use-of-proceeds verification and impact reporting.
  • Effective in IT skills required for the job role, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Bloomberg
  • Planning, organisation, time and data management and administrative capabilities.
  • You’re a pro-active, self-motivated team player with the ability to manage an interesting and variable workload and be willing to assist and support other team members when required.
