For more information visit Beckton CHiP plant is designed to have an overall world-leading electrical efficiency of more than 55%, and export up to 17MW of electricity. The plant uses bioliquid fuels classified as renewable and sustainable such as tallow, used cooking oil soya oil and rapeseed oil to power a marine diesel engine. Renewable waste heat from the plant is used in the adjacent gas pressure reduction station owned by Cadent, enabling it to reduce the use of its existing gas heaters and let down the gas pressure for distribution.


The Opportunity
We are now recruiting for an Operations Technician.

In this role you will be responsible for the safe, efficient operation, maintenance & improvement of the CHiP in line with business and statutory needs. This is a dual operational and maintenance role working as part of a shift team.

You’ll be supported with personalised on the job training, coaching, mentoring and twice-yearly development and performance reviews to help maintain & develop your contributions and competence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Following assigned targets ensure safe, environmental & statutory compliant CHiP operation and maintenance which meets and mitigates the CHiP operating requirements.
  • Monitoring, inspecting and controlling plant parameters & providing appropriate first line maintenance.
  • Interpret and control plant operations through general plant and data presented via a DCS.
  • Identify, assist & respond effectively to operational demands achieving safe, efficient generation within prescribed limits during routine, foreseeable deviation and emergency operating conditions.
  • Provide plant systems start up and shutdown services and participate in emergency shutdown procedures.
  • Identify and immediately report plant defects, observations and anomalies that have, or have the potential to affect the safety of the process or which are noted to be abnormal to usual operations.
  • Complete plant routine duties maintaining commercial performance, availability and reliability.
  • Complete assigned safety duties including px safe systems of work, setting people to work & housekeeping.
  • Assist the Operations Supervisor and other designated px personnel on projects and outage preparation.
  • Control raw material offloading including road tanker fuel, oil and Urea. Ensure each product is diverted to the dedicated storage tanks & sampling activities are conducted & documented enabling Ofgem compliance.
  • Complete required training to develop and maintain competence in completion of required job responsibilities including to HV authorised person under the px safe systems of work requirements.
  • In line with business & statutory requirements, develop & maintain documentation, records & procedures.
  • Provide relevant operational advice and guidance to other Operations and Beckton CHiP team members.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Minimum Requirements:
  • NVQ L3 or time served apprenticeship in an engineering or process discipline.
  • Previous experience contributing to a continuous process/production/operational environment.
  • First line maintenance experience.
  • Able to follow procedures, systems & processes.
  • Experience supporting planning & outage management.
  • Fault finding, route cause analysis, problem solving, data monitoring.
  • Able to make practical recommendations to continually improve operations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safe System of Work processes & procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Permit to work: risk assessments & method statements.
