We're working with a well-established logistics and shipping business who are seeking an experienced Operations & Sales Supervisor to join their growing Southampton team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a solid background in ocean freight, out-of-gauge, or breakbulk operations to step into a leadership role that combines hands-on operational management with commercial development.
The Role
As a Shipping Supervisor, you'll oversee a small, dedicated team handling daily operations across import, export, and project shipments. You'll take ownership of service delivery, team performance, and customer satisfaction-while also driving commercial growth through proactive pricing, quotations, and business development support.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise a small team managing day-to-day ocean freight and project logistics operations
Oversee out-of-gauge and breakbulk movements, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and timely delivery
Support and guide the team on shipment planning, documentation, and carrier liaison
Manage and develop key customer relationships, acting as the main point of contact for commercial discussions
Prepare and negotiate competitive rates and quotes
Collaborate with senior management to identify opportunities for service and revenue growth
Monitor performance metrics and contribute to process improvements
About You
Proven background in shipping, ocean freight, out-of-gauge, or breakbulk logistics
Previous experience supervising or mentoring a small team
Strong commercial mindset with experience in sales, pricing, or account management
Excellent communication, organisation, and leadership skills
Confident working directly with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders
A proactive, driven professional who's keen to develop and grow within a dynamic business

Responsibilities:
- Manage the day-to-day operations of a designated fleet of vessels, ensuring optimal performance and adherence to schedules.
- Oversee voyage planning, charter party execution, and cargo operations to maximize efficiency and profitability.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant international maritime regulations (IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, etc.) and flag state requirements.
- Lead and mentor the shore-based fleet management team, fostering a culture of performance and accountability.
- Coordinate vessel maintenance, dry-docking, repairs, and statutory surveys, ensuring operational readiness.
- Develop and implement strategies to enhance safety, security, and environmental performance across the fleet.
- Manage operational budgets, controlling costs related to fuel, maintenance, port calls, and crew expenses.
- Liaise with charterers, agents, port authorities, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth operations.
- Respond effectively to operational emergencies and incidents, implementing contingency plans.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of fleet operational procedures and systems.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior operational or management role within the maritime shipping industry.
- Strong knowledge of vessel operations, ship management, and maritime law.
- Experience with international shipping regulations and classification society rules.
- Proven leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in fleet management software and IT systems.
- A relevant maritime qualification (e.g., Chief Officer/Master Mariner unlimited license, relevant degree) is highly desirable.
- Ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment, managing responsibilities both remotely and from the office.
- Commitment to safety, environmental protection, and operational excellence.
- Right to work in the UK.
