What the role of the Modelling Systems Engineer entails:
Some of the main duties of the Modelling Systems Engineer will include:
- Apply Model based Systems Engineering subject matter expertise and domain experience to through the formalised application of modelling to support system requirements, design, analysis, verification and validation activities
- Understanding and modelling the customer and user needs of the product system and how this will influence and impact design activities, technical and operational performance
- Ensure design proving evidence is comprehensive, captured within the model and has been endorsed by the appropriate level of authority
- Integrate these models to other models of the platform
- Report the programme status for engineering activities, identify problem areas and implement recovery plans. This will include the management of any consequent change embodiment activities
- Lead the development of estimates for the scope of work and resources required to deliver it in order to support bids, proposal development and project planning activities for various systems
- Share your knowledge and experience to lead and, develop others in MBSE (Model Based Systems Engineering)
What experience you need to be the successful Modelling Systems Engineer:
Essential:
- Experience of Model Based Systems Engineering process and practices in the defence, maritime or closely linked industry and the correct recognition of the context of their work within the overall product an academic basis underpinning the discipline
- Experience of the engineering lifecycle with experience of operating in the phase relevant to the role and awareness of the entire engineering lifecycle
- Knowledge of relevant engineering standards, including safety and environmental regulations
Desirable:
- Experience working with a Systems Engineering modelling tool such as: Enterprise Architect (EA)
- Experience working with a Systems modelling language such as SysML
- Knowledge of modelling frameworks

We're seeking a Performance Modelling Engineer to take ownership of high-level system modelling at the concept stage for advanced power and propulsion systems. You'll be responsible for developing 0D models to support early design decisions and trade-offs - including efficiency, mass, and power output.
This is a fully onsite, hands-on technical role suited to someone who can work independently while engaging closely with multi-disciplinary teams. A background in thermodynamics, fluid systems, or power generation is ideal. Aerospace experience is welcome but not essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and manage system-level performance models for early-stage concepts
- Produce and maintain version-controlled performance decks aligned with design updates
- Analyse performance predictions and identify areas for system optimisation
- Inform system sizing and architecture decisions through modelling and trade studies
- Collaborate with engineering teams to create simplified models and support design reviews
- Provide data and insights to support both technical and commercial decision-making

Location: Nuneaton or Bristol (3 days/week on site)
Contract Duration : 24 Months
Daily Rate: £400/day (Umbrella – Maximum)
IR35 Status: Inside IR35
Minimum Requirement:
- Modelling and simulation in an automotive industry
- Auditing Experience
- Experience in vehicle control systems
Duties include, but are not limited to;
- Lead on the assessment simulated evidence use for the type approval of ADAS / ADS to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Perform credibility assessments to ensure manufacturer claims of effective processes and that models are robust.
- Determine compliance from the outcome of credibility and vehicle assessments.
- Support the wider Agency in the assessment of simulated evidence for other type approval subjects.
- Collaborate with the client managers to ensure effective delivery of type approvals.
- Oversee the work of engineers involved in type approval activities to ensure the highest standards are maintained through the type approval process.
- Ensure consistency in the Type Approval process by following, establishing and maintain internal guidelines and procedures, while adhering to Agency held accreditations.
- Collaborate with technical lead in the Type Approval Authority by using experience and knowledge to support development of technical interpretations and broader policy developments.
- Actively participate in professional development activities to enhance and update technical and legislation knowledge, staying at the forefront of toolchains and technologies.
- Create and conduct training on modelling and simulation procedures, use of analysis tools, and data validation techniques.
- Act as a mentor and guide colleagues in the realm of modelling & simulation, sharing your practical insights and knowledge to foster skill development and growth in the team.
- Line manage engineers within the Modelling and Simulation team.
Essential criteria
- Using industry recognised software to evaluate vehicle dynamic performance.
- Validating simulation models against experimental data.
Qualifications
- Level 6, or higher, qualification in Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or other related fields.
Full UK Category B Driving Licence; non UK Licences will not be accepted

Overview
We're seeking a Performance Modelling Engineer to take ownership of high-level system modelling at the concept stage for advanced power and propulsion systems. You'll be responsible for developing 0D models to support early design decisions and trade-offs - including efficiency, mass, and power output.
This is a fully onsite, hands-on technical role suited to someone who can work independently while engaging closely with multi-disciplinary teams. A background in thermodynamics, fluid systems, or power generation is ideal. Aerospace experience is welcome but not essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and manage system-level performance models for early-stage concepts
- Produce and maintain version-controlled performance decks aligned with design updates
- Analyse performance predictions and identify areas for system optimisation
- Inform system sizing and architecture decisions through modelling and trade studies
- Collaborate with engineering teams to create simplified models and support design reviews
- Provide data and insights to support both technical and commercial decision-making
- Work with customers to manage input data and communicate performance implications
- Generate pragmatic, first-principle models for early concept evaluation
- Contribute to the development of automated, robust simulation tools and modelling processes
- Support validation of performance models in collaboration with R&D, CAE, and Test teams
- Assist in developing system-level models (e.g. full-vehicle or aircraft applications)
- Document model results and prepare technical reports for specifications and forecasts
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- BEng, BSc or equivalent in engineering, physics or a related discipline
- Strong experience in system-level modelling using tools such as MATLAB
- Sound understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, or energy systems
- Ability to build pragmatic, simplified models based on first principles
Desirable:
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership
- Sector experience in aerospace, automotive, or energy industries
- Familiarity with model automation, toolchain development or simulation roadmapping

Essential:
- Experience of Model Based Systems Engineering process and practices in the defence, maritime or closely linked industry and the correct recognition of the context of their work within the overall product an academic basis underpinning the discipline
- Experience of the engineering lifecycle with experience of operating in the phase relevant to the role and awareness of the entire engineering lifecycle
- Knowledge of relevant engineering standards, including safety and environmental regulations
Desirable:
- Experience working with a Systems Engineering modelling tool such as: Enterprise Architect (EA)
- Experience working with a Systems modelling language such as SysML
- Knowledge of modelling frameworks
- Knowledge or awareness of ISO15288
