This role is pivotal in managing project costs and ensuring financial efficiency, directly contributing to Woodford's mission of delivering exceptional building services and exceeding client expectations.
The role holder will work under the supervision of a senior quantity surveyor and will have responsibility for assisting with cost management, contract administration, and risk analysis to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
A graduate quantity surveyor's duties are diverse and cover the entire lifecycle of a construction project. Key responsibilities include:
- Cost Management and Forecasting : Assisting with cost estimation for materials, labor, and time. This involves preparing bills of quantities, analyzing project costs, and creating financial reports and cash flow forecasts to track profitability.
- Contract and Tender Documents : Helping to prepare and analyze tender and contract documents. They may also assist in evaluating quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.
- Subcontractor Management : Allocating work to subcontractors and overseeing their work. A graduate quantity surveyor is also involved in certifying interim and final payments and managing final accounts.
- Risk Analysis : Identifying and analyzing potential commercial risks and contractual disputes. They assist in developing strategies to mitigate these risks and provide advice on legal matters.
- Reporting and Administration : Preparing monthly progress reports and other detailed financial documents. They maintain accurate records and ensure all documentation is complete and organized.
Qualifications, Skills & Competencies
- Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying or related field
- Understanding of cost control principles
- Excellent analytical and numerical skills
- Proficiency in relevant software tools (e.g. Excel)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for liaising with clients, contractors and other team members.
- A meticulous and methodical approach is essential for accurate cost estimation and document preparation.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
- A creative and logical approach to overcoming challenges and finding cost-effective solutions.
- Keeness to gain increased knowledge of current construction regulations, market trends and business principles.

Building Consultancy based in Manchester City Centre looking to appoint a Land Surveyor to join their growing team.
My client are a Niche Building Consultancy that have experienced a fantastic period of growth over the last 12 months and are targeting further growth during 2025. They have an established client base that has been continually increasing, resulting in a decision to open up a measured surveying / land surveying branch to their business.
They currently receive a large number of enquiries each year from their existing client which until recently they have outsourced to external consultants but have taken the leap to bring and develop that workload in-house.
The ideal candidate will have experience in completing Topographical Surveys and ideally have experience working on AutoCAD. Training will be provided, and your career path will be determined by your own aspirations, whichever area you want to focus on will be accommodated. There is also a real probability that you will have the opportunity to grow within the business and really put your stamp on this business service.
