About the role

As a Software Development Engineer you will perform software engineering design and testing in support of the Westinghouse nuclear analysis, utility, and related code systems in a strongly regulated software environment. Our proprietary platform enables the production of high-value speciality oils and fats – drop‑in solutions for food, cosmetics and other industries. With facilities ranging from pilot to 1,000,000L capacity, we are scaling rapidly towards commercialisation.

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced individual to manage scale‑up of our manufacturing process and production at our commercial plant in Knowsley, Liverpool.

Role Overview

Lead the day‑to‑day operations of our fermentation facility, reporting to the Head of Manufacturing Technology. You will manage large‑scale microbial fermentations, oversee production staff, ensure process compliance and drive continuous improvement in yield, cost and quality.

Responsibilities
  • Lead daily operations of the fermentation plant, scheduling, monitoring and troubleshooting production runs.
  • Manage and train production operators, technicians and shift leaders.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality and regulatory standards (e.g. HSE, HACCP, GMP, food safety).
  • Work closely with R&D and process development teams to transfer new processes from pilot to commercial scale.
  • Develop and implement SOPs for fermentation and downstream operations.
  • Monitor KPIs for yield, productivity, downtime and cost efficiency; report performance regularly.
  • Manage inventory of feedstocks, media and consumables.
  • Oversee maintenance and calibration of fermentation and DSP equipment, in cooperation with engineering teams.
  • Support CAPEX projects for facility upgrades and new installations.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement, operational excellence and safety.
The Person We’re Looking For

We need a self‑motivated, creative team player passionate about sustainability, bioprocessing, engineering and scale‑up, who wants to make a positive impact.

Qualifications
  • Degree in Biotechnology, Bioprocess Engineering, Microbiology or related field (advanced degree desirable).
  • 5+ years’ experience in industrial fermentation (microbial, yeast or similar bioprocesses).
  • Experience managing large‑scale fermenters (≥10,000L) and associated downstream processes.
  • Strong knowledge of process control, scale‑up and troubleshooting in fermentation.
  • Proven leadership experience managing production teams.
  • Familiarity with food‑grade or GMP production environments.
  • Excellent problem‑solving, organisational and communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work in a dynamic scale‑up environment.

Working for our organisation

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport. Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed. We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need. Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident. We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
