Role Description

With support from the Sustainability & ESG Team, an intern with a demonstrated interest in nature and biodiversity topics will have an opportunity to work on two projects in this focus area providing data-informed insights and recommendations.

This is a paid internship and is available on full-time/part-time basis e.g. 2-3 days/week is permitted.

Closing date - Friday 8th March

Please note the internship will be focused on nature and biodiversity from an investments and regulation point of view, focusing in on England’s new Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) policies and the ESG reporting requirements of the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)  – the role will be largely office-based.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will have two distinct projects focused on nature and biodiversity policy in England (Project A) and on best practice ESG reporting requirements on nature, particularly the TNFD Framework (Project B)

  • Project A will involve a review of how the BNG UK market has played out and look at potential maturity across other geographies, providing insights and recommendations for how this affects Low Carbon’s business as a whole and its different renewable energy technologies (solar, onshore wind, energy from waste).
  • Project B will involve would be looking at how Low Carbon could best prepare for TNFD (which we will be reporting against in 2025) – working together with our ESG Reporting Manager to look at the framework and scope to deliver identifying potential gaps, providing insights and recommendations to Low Carbon.

Job Overview


We are currently recruiting two brand new Senior Specialists into our team – an Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) and an Ecology expert. 


The role holders will support the Principal Biodiversity & INNS Specialist as part of an in-house team to deliver the company's Biodiversity and Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) and/or deliver the company's Biodiversity Performance Commitment and Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP). Successful implementation of our WINEP programmes directly influences our Environmental Performance Assessment star rating. These roles will manage a small delivery team.


  • Subject matter expert on Ecology or INNS, conservation delivery partnerships and how they relate directly to our business.
  • Support the delivery of key programmes of work, including Biodiversity, INNS, land management of our estate and the delivery of our WINEP programme. 
  • Supporting the Principal Biodiversity & INNS Specialist to technically manage implementation, monitoring and reporting of biodiversity / INNS initiatives and projects. Responsible for undertaking technical evaluation / recommendations on environmental nature-based measures needed.
  • Engagement with key stakeholders and partners, environmental NGOs and catchment partnerships, as well as other Water Companies to promote our programme. Representing Southern Water on technical environmental partnerships.


About You


  • Demonstrable applied expertise of project delivery in ecological/botanical monitoring, biodiversity enhancement projects, estate management, and innovative conservation delivery.
  • Proven experience of project delivery of INNS/Biodiversity or Ecology projects.
  • Experience managing delivery of technical work via sub-contracted consultancy teams.
  • A strong track record of stakeholder engagement and management.
  • Experience of managing and mentoring a small team.

The role


We're looking for a motivated Associate to deliver projects, ensuring positive outcomes for nature whilst supporting client needs and meeting fee targets. This includes:

What we are looking for


Qualifications and accreditations


  • Graduate (MSc desirable) in a relevant scientific degree (ecology, biology, environmental science or similar).
  • Full member of CIEEM (or equivalent) .

Ecology skills and knowledge


Must be accomplished in the following areas:


  • Botany and habitat identification.
  • PEA survey and report preparation.
  • Bat survey, including survey design and approach, call identification, bat ecology and behaviour, and mitigation, compensation and enhancement approaches.
  • Herpetofauna survey, including survey design and approach, call identification, reptile and GCN ecology and behaviour, and mitigation, compensation and enhancement approaches.
  • An accomplished understanding of at least one other group of species as above points, but a strong understanding of all protected species legislation and survey approaches, including dormice, badgers, invertebrates, birds and plants.
  • Protected species mitigation licence preparation - must at least have accomplished understanding of bat licencing.
  • HRA and appropriate assessment.
  • Ecological Impact Assessment.
  • BREEAM land use and ecology credit assessment.
  • Desirable to hold protected species licences for bats, GCN or other species.


Biodiversity skills and knowledge


Must be accomplished in the following areas:


  • BNG baselining, including botanical identification and habitat classification.
  • A detailed understanding of how the Statutory Biodiversity Metric functions.
  • Understanding how GIS can be used to optimise these approaches but not necessarily be skilled to undertake GIS mapping.
  • BNG legislation and policy, including future trends and contemporary interpretation of best practice.
  • BNG optimisation through habitat action.
  • BNG habitat banking principles and approaches for offsetting.
  • Principles of River MoRPh assessment (although may not hold accreditation).
  • Production of BGPs, LEMPs and HMMPs.
  • Preparation of ecological management plans following contemporary best practice.

Join our esteemed environmental consultancy as a Senior Wildlife Management Officer, working in a fully remote capacity. This vital role supports conservation efforts and ensures responsible land management across various sites, with a focus on the region around Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK . You will be responsible for conducting ecological surveys, developing and implementing wildlife mitigation strategies, and ensuring compliance with environmental legislation. This position offers the opportunity to contribute significantly to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development from your home office.

Responsibilities:
  • Conducting comprehensive ecological and wildlife surveys (e.g., Phase 1 habitat surveys, protected species surveys).
  • Developing and implementing bespoke wildlife mitigation and enhancement strategies for development projects.
  • Producing high-quality Ecological Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Natural England/Natural Resources Wales/SEPA licensing applications.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant wildlife legislation (e.g., Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Habitats Regulations).
  • Managing and mentoring junior ecologists and survey teams.
  • Liaising effectively with clients, local planning authorities, Natural England, and other stakeholders.
  • Undertaking fieldwork, often involving extended periods outdoors in varied conditions.
  • Developing and delivering training on wildlife management and conservation principles.
  • Contributing to business development, including proposal writing and client engagement.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of implemented conservation measures.

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Ecology, Zoology, Wildlife Biology, or a closely related environmental science discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of demonstrable experience in ecological consultancy or a related field, with a strong focus on wildlife management.
  • Proven expertise in conducting protected species surveys (e.g., bats, great crested newts, badgers, reptiles) and hold relevant survey licenses where applicable.
  • Excellent knowledge of UK wildlife legislation and planning policy.
  • Proficiency in using GIS software for spatial analysis and mapping.
  • Strong report writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and technically accurate documentation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, essential for remote collaboration and client liaison.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Full UK driving license and access to a reliable vehicle for occasional site visits.
  • A passion for wildlife conservation and a commitment to delivering high-quality ecological advice.
