We're working with a highly respected legal business whose credit function is growing due to increased client activity and a greater focus on international risk. As a result, they're looking for a confident and commercially minded Credit Risk Analyst / Credit Controller to join the team on an initial 6-month contract.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong credit experience in a professional services environment who wants to move into a more strategic, risk-focused position where you will get the chance to review financials, interpret credit reports, and help the business make informed onboarding decisions.



The Role

In this role, you'll work closely with internal stakeholders to assess the financial health of new and prospective clients. You'll be responsible for analysing credit reports and balance sheets, identifying potential risks, and providing clear recommendations to fee earners and partners regarding credit limits and onboarding decisions.

You'll also play a key role in wider credit control activity - supporting with aged debt, resolving complex billing issues, and contributing to debtor review meetings - all within a collaborative and experienced credit function.

This isn't a traditional ledger-focused credit control position; it's a forward-looking role focused on protecting the business through smart risk analysis and effective stakeholder communication.



Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough reviews of credit reports, financial statements, and balance sheets to assess the financial health of new and existing clients
  • Identify adverse information or warning signs and summarise risk clearly for internal stakeholders
  • Prepare detailed credit risk assessments to support decisions on client onboarding and setting credit limits
  • Work closely with stakeholders across departments (e.g. fee earners, matter partners) to communicate risk insights and support onboarding processes
  • Contribute to debtor review meetings, offering insight and analysis on higher-risk or problematic accounts
  • Act as a key point of contact for queries around financial risk, credit limits, and client account setup
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of credit risk best practices, adapting approach based on client type and jurisdiction
  • Support the wider credit function by managing a selection of accounts within the ledger
  • Chase overdue payments via phone and email, working with procurement teams and legal contacts to resolve issues
  • Assist in resolving complex invoice queries or disputes, escalating where necessary
  • Help maintain aged debt levels within agreed targets, ensuring any problem accounts are escalated quickly


What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience in credit control and/or credit risk, ideally within professional services (legal, accountancy, consultancy, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of credit risk assessment, including reading and interpreting financial documents, although someone who has limited experience with this would still be considered.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and confident communication - able to influence and challenge where necessary
  • Commercially astute and detail-oriented
  • Proficient in Excel and comfortable handling financial data
  • A collaborative team player who enjoys cross-functional working

**Responsibilities**
+ Perform financial and credit analysis, risk rating analysis ensuring adherence to prevailing credit policy and procedures for an assigned portfolio.

Central Rating and Underwriting Team (CRU) sits within the Credit and Fraud Risk division and forms the institutional credit risk management function within American Express. The CRU team plays the critical role of assessing and managing the risk of institutional exposures across all business units within American Express, and in all regions globally. Credit exposures are primarily generated through corporate and small business card programs, working capital facilities, via merchant service relationships where non-delivery risk exists, and among the securities portfolio held for firm-wide liquidity.

**How will you make an impact in this role?**
Credit Risk Analysts in CRU are responsible for rating and underwriting credit exposures in their assigned region, industry, and business line. The Analysts' fundamental credit assessment incorporates a thorough review of business, financial, industry and country risk coupled with support from internal and external rating model outputs. Analysts will also need to show an understanding of the need for credit extension, profitability of the relationship, risk mitigation and program structures.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Fluency in English mandatory; at least one other Western European language would be highly advantageous.
+ Bachelor's degree/equivalent in Finance or a related subject.
+ Experience in fundamental credit analysis and / or underwriting of commercial enterprises (1-2 years)
+ Understanding of fundamental financial analysis including the ability to review corporate financial statements to determine key risk drivers, an appropriate probability of default and the ability of the obligor to honour its credit obligations to American Express.
+ Comfortable determining appropriate credit capacity, structuring of facilities, and risk mitigation techniques.

The Role

We are looking to add a Credit Risk Analyst to the team who will evaluate the creditworthiness of potential borrowers, analyze financial data and credit scores to determine risks in lending. You will review and interpret complex financial statements and economic trends to advise on credit limits and risk mitigation strategies. The analyst will monitor the financial health of existing clients to anticipate and manage potential default risks. They also ensure that all lending activities comply with regulatory standards and internal policies. Through your analysis, you will support the decision-making process regarding loan approvals and risk management.

Requirements

  • Design and maintain statistical models for the assessment of credit risk.
  • Analyse large datasets to forecast financial outcomes and estimate risks.
  • Perform stress testing and scenario analysis to assess potential impacts on credit portfolios.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to manage credit risk exposure effectively.
  • Compile and present analytical reports to senior management and key stakeholders.

You will need:

  • A degree in Finance, Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Proficient in statistical analysis software and programming languages such as SQL, Python, or SAS.
  • Strong understanding of credit risk metrics (PD, LGD, EAD) and financial modelling.
  • Experience with data visualization tools and techniques.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Role Description:
As part of Global Banking & Markets, GCIB Credit manages and delivers the credit relationship for wholesale clients in accordance with the company's growth strategy, risk appetite and underwriting standards. While we are an independent function, we work closely with various lines of business, relationship managers, product specialists and Risk.
Global Banking & Markets includes corporate banking, investment banking and sales & trading. The group provides services to large corporations, government entities and institutional investors. These services include mergers and acquisition advice, equity and debt capital raising, corporate lending, sales and trading in fixed income, commodities, currency and equities, risk management, research, and liquidity and payments management.
Responsibilities:
+ Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the Global Banking & Markets product spectrum.
+ Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the portfolio at the client, industry, and macro level to assess risk and craft value added solutions that balance risk.
+ Assess the credit worthiness, including due diligence of prospective borrowers and/or trading counterparties and establish appropriate terms and conditions to mitigate risk.
+ Structure transactions and negotiate credit documentation including; credit agreements, amendments, derivative documentation.
+ Ensuring granularity of the portfolio with specific reference to targets for net country/credit capital, legally binding commitments, total exposure and asset quality.
+ Establish appropriate internal risk ratings for clients and implement accurate adjustments throughout the client's credit life cycle.

+ Extensive credit risk experience at a major international financial institution, analysing, assessing companies in different sectors and structuring transactions.
Skills that will help:
+ Fluency in use of all Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
