- Responsibilities : You will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in designing, developing and communicating health economic models alongside our experienced Health Economics team who will provide one-to-one training and mentoring throughout the internship
- Salary : A pro-rated salary of £25,800 per annum outside of London (£7,050 per annum in London)

Our Health Economics Internship is ideal for current students and recent graduates in an economic, mathematical or computer science discipline seeking to gain an insight into life at a fast-growing consultancy serving clients from the pharmaceutical industry.
Projects can involve developing simple costing tools to substantially more complicated models that aim to demonstrate the value of products and therapies to reimbursement agencies.
Health Economists at Costello Medical create economic models to guide resource allocation for healthcare providers and share insights with industry stakeholders through cost-effectiveness analyses or separate cost and benefit evaluations. These models are typically built in Microsoft Excel (and occasionally R, or C++,) employing universal mathematical and statistical modelling techniques. Model development can involve fitting statistical distributions and parametric survival curves to clinical data and therefore requires a good knowledge of statistics. The models developed by our Health Economists have real-world implications, aiming to improve the efficiency of healthcare systems by using robust methodological frameworks to inform decision-making that brings treatments to people who need them.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Conduct research and critically appraise medical and economic literature to inform project objectives
- Understand and apply theoretical health economic frameworks to relevant projects
- Develop high-quality, technically robust, and clinically valid models using Microsoft Excel or other relevant software
- Interpret and analyse model results, producing accurate and comprehensive reports detailing methodologies and outcomes
Given the wealth of training, mentorship and development opportunities that are available as part of our internship programmes, time spent in the office is even more crucial. Therefore, our Interns can work from home for 1 day per week.

About YouThis internship is open to undergraduates and post-graduates, professionals considering a career change, as well as and current students who can complete full-time internships outside of term time or as part of their degree. Please note that we do not recommend completing the Health Economist Internship programme at the same time as studying, completing a dissertation or writing a PhD thesis due to the competing demands of your course and the role.
Essential requirements for the role are:
- An undergraduate degree level qualification in an economic, mathematical or computer science discipline (minimum 2.1 or equivalent). Postgraduate qualifications (minimum 2.1 or equivalent) would be an advantage, but they are not a requirement for the role
- An A-level in Mathematics (minimum B grade or equivalent)
- An excellent level of attention to detail in both quantitative and qualitative settings
- Strong organisational skills, the ability to plan your own work effectively and the flexibility to respond to changing deadlines
- The ability to communicate mathematical and economic material clearly in both written and oral formats

Business and Economics are popular subjects at both AS and A Level, and a substantial number of our learners progress to business related qualifications at university.
