Reporting to the Technical QA Manager, we are looking to hire a smart and technically savvy Software Automation Engineer to join our team and help drive the growth of INSTANDA.

About the Team:

Our independent automation team sits within the wider QA function and is responsible for providing support to the QA function and delivery teams via the provision of specific expertise relating to intelligent automation solutions to optimise the delivery of high-quality deliverables. We work in an agile manner but we aren't constrained in how we approach our deliverables. We cover both functional and non-functional areas. We value independence of thought, solid communication skills and a continuous learning mindset.

What You'll Do

  • Design, implement and maintain the QE Automation framework.
  • Design and implement solutions that increase the effectiveness of the automated test effort.
  • Actively contribute to feature development, ensuring that the right tests are run at the right level.
  • Analyse existing regression test scenarios, creating automated tests where applicable.
  • Monitor the execution of automated E2E and API test scenarios.
  • Articulation of risks to end-users for a particular test approach.
  • Assists the wider QE community in understanding and using automation techniques to resolve complex technical tasks.
  • Assisting their own team in defining functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Perform regression testing when required
  • Contribute to the wider QE community of practice


Requirements


Essential:

  • At least 1+ year experience with manual or automated software testing (internships count!)
  • Understanding of software testing concepts and methodologies
  • Familiarity with testing tools and bug tracking systems is a plus
  • Exceptional organisation and prioritisation skills - we are a fast paced, agile environment
  • Flexible, resilient, and commercial attitude coupled with a high degree of intellectual curiosity
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability
  • Experience writing scripts using C# is an asset
  • Practical experience of applying Object-Oriented Programming principles.
  • Experience with a test framework such as Selenium, Playwright or an API based framework.
  • Experience designing, implementing and prioritising test cases for functional and nonfunctional requirements.
  • Experience with deployment, test management and source control tools such as Azure DevOps (or similar), Octopus, Git, Test Rail, Jira etc.
  • Stakeholder management skills at all levels, ability to work with all relevant parties (project, solutions, supplier technical teams, internal technical teams, engineering teams) to establish a high level of quality throughout the delivery lifecycle


Desirable:

  • Experience with user-configurable software, which works according to business rules configured by non-technical users
  • Experience with collaborative development methodologies such as BDD or SpecFlow
  • Experience in mentoring and upskilling peers within an engineering function
  • Experience in the insurance industry is a plus.
  • Experience working with cloud service providers, preferably Azure.

The Role

This role focuses on developing and maintaining automated test equipment to ensure the high quality and performance of our products. You will guide projects through requirements elicitation, design, development, test, release and support. Outside of test, you will use your experience and knowledge to create robust and efficient solutions to assist in other areas of the company, as well as driving best practice and industry standards. Solutions will include a multi discipline collaboration of skills and departments.

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Design and develop internal software using a selection of programming languages (Python / C#/ C++ / LabView), to support the manufacture and testing of our Graphene electronics products.
  • Support the development of automated test equipment by writing software to communicate with hardware for motion control and data acquisition.
  • Support the integration of production systems (MES/ERP) with internal software applications, e.g. through the development of APIs.
  • Design and integrate Microsoft SQL databases for test data storage, manufacturing tracking, and system configuration.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and data engineers throughout a system’s development and production life cycle.
  • Troubleshoot systems issues involving both software and hardware.
  • Maintain effective communication with cross-functional stakeholders to elicit functional and non-functional software requirements, ensuring alignment with business / product needs.
  • Own Solution Project Plans and reporting of progress & updates to Management.
  • Take a proactive approach to CI/CD and Testing, ensuring best practice and longevity is at its core and provide professional documentation and frameworks.
  • Manage Git repositories as administrator, deciding on permission and workflow setups.
  • Manage subordinates’ workload and line management as and when required.
  • Maintain and promote excellent understanding of software design principles for efficient and maintainable code.

  • 3+ years of experience in automated test equipment software development for manufacturing and system integration.

  • Experience designing and maintaining database architectures in relational databases.

Overview

Responsibilities
  • Deliver a flexible, logical & analytical approach to testing and supporting industry-leading product Innovation solutions
  • Create and execute test cases (manual/automated), document test results and raise defects where you are responsible for end-to-end tracking of all issues found
  • Developing, Identifying and selecting the automation test cases
  • Creating an automation test plan and getting approval
  • Creating, enhancing, debugging, and running the test cases
  • Collating and monitoring the defect management process
  • Managing the changes and executing regression tests
  • Coming up with exact solutions for problems related to object identity and error handling
  • Interacting with customers/clients to solve the various issues they face and updating on the situation
  • Test new technologies and system functionality to ensure business acceptance, user acceptance and system integration
  • Participate in defect triage and Scrum meetings.
  • Manage, monitor, triage, allocate and prioritise the bug backlog.
  • Participate in backlog refinement sessions with Product Owners and Developers to ensure a common understanding on what is required is developed, this will include building out User Stories, Acceptance Criteria and Test Cases.
  • Scope and define detailed bug backlog item descriptions that feed into sprint planning
  • Provide technical product, system and data analysis to support the development team.
  • Perform various types of testing including exploratory, automated, black box, regression, security, Integration, end-to-end, Sanity and user acceptance testing
  • Provide effective technical test analysis, design requirements and relevant documentation.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough and up-to-date working technical knowledge of digital solutions and the NAVTOR product suit

  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent level of experience.
Experience and skills

  • Some end-to-end test experience
  • Good understanding of software development life cycle and QA processes

  • Ability to proactively provide technical analysis support to a development team.
  • Excellent logical, analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify technical solutions.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in IT environment, preferably with focus on quality assurance.
  • Maintain an active interest and understanding of current and new development tools, technologies and techniques.
  • Ability to interact successfully with people at all levels, requiring diplomacy & tact.
  • Experience with test automation tools. (i.e. Selenium)

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE BUSINESS:

As a Test Automation Engineer (Associate) in Kainos, you’ll work within a multi‑skilled agile team, developing and executing functional automated and manual tests to help the team deliver working application software that meets user needs. The Role

This role focuses on developing and maintaining automated test equipment to ensure the high quality and performance of our products. You will guide projects through requirements elicitation, design, development, test, release and support. Outside of test, you will use your experience and knowledge to create robust and efficient solutions to assist in other areas of the company, as well as driving best practice and industry standards. Solutions will include a multi discipline collaboration of skills and departments.

Responsibilities & Tasks
  • Design and develop internal software using a selection of programming languages (Python / C#/ C++ / LabView), to support the manufacture and testing of our Graphene electronics products
  • Support the development of automated test equipment by writing software to communicate with hardware for motion control and data acquisition
  • Support the integration of production systems (MES/ERP) with internal software applications, e.g. through the development of APIs.
  • Design and integrate Microsoft SQL databases for test data storage, manufacturing tracking, and system configuration
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and data engineers throughout a system's development and production life cycle
  • Troubleshoot systems issues involving both software and hardware
  • Maintain effective communication with cross-functional stakeholders to elicit functional and non-functional software requirements, ensuring alignment with business / product needs
  • Own Solution Project Plans and reporting of progress & updates to Management
  • Take a proactive approach to CI/CD and Testing, ensuring best practice and longevity is at its core and provide professional documentation and frameworks
  • Manage Git repositories as administrator, deciding on permission and workflow setups
  • Manage subordinates' workload and line management as and when required
  • Maintain and promote excellent understanding of software design principles for efficient and maintainable code.
  • Continuously seeking new ways for automation to drive company efficiency
  • Deliver tactical quick wins and show adaptability and flexibility with day to day activity

Requirements

Education and Qualifications

  • Computer science degree or equivalent software development experience from time in industry.

Experience

  • Experience developing software in Python / C# / C++ / LabView / SQL and writing testable, maintainable code
  • Experience creating and maintaining predominantly internal software solutions for data acquisition, processing, modelling and visualisation
  • 3+ years of experience in automated test equipment software development for manufacturing and system integration
  • Experience working within cross-functional teams on the design and delivery of internal instrumentation / tools
  • Experienced with Git for version control
  • Experience with agile workflow and supporting software (e.g. Jira)
  • Experience designing and maintaining database architectures in relational databases
  • Experience providing top-level technical summaries to support development within a NPD framework
  • Experience working in a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Ability to face into challenges and adapt
Preferred Skills that Set You Apart
  • Experience with production system configuration / development (e.g. MES/ERPs)
