What Jobs?

NHS Jobs Information
Established in 1948 after the Second World War, the National Health Service has become one of the top and most important employers in the United Kingdom. There are over 70 different specific jobs available in the National Health Service (NHS), from administration to dentistry, and many more. Paid for through taxation and general National Insurance contributions, the NHS remains fundamentally free, with the exception of dental treatment and optical care. The responsibilities of each career are vastly different, but all focus on the wellbeing and health of the general public and is a job with long hours and demanding tasks.

What are the requirements for NHS jobs?
The requirements differ depending on the role in the NHS. For example, there are no set requirements to become a healthcare assistant. Employers will expect good literacy and numeracy and may sometimes ask for GCSEs in Maths and English. Whereas to become a neurosurgeon, employers will need an MBBS (Bachelors in Medicine, Bachelors in Surgery) as well as completion in a two-year foundation programme. After completing foundation training, more speciality training is required before becoming a neurosurgeon is allowed. The entire process from University to a full-time job can take over ten years.  Gaining experience is a big part of NHS work, with some experiences lasting 5-7 years.

What is the NHS Job Market like?
A report published by the King’s Fund, the Health Foundation and the Nuffield Trust show that there will be 350,000 vacancies by 2030. The demand for staff is an opportunity to fill the endless positions available today. Finding an NHS job can be easy if it is unspecialised like being a care worker or a medical secretary. Specialised careers in dentistry and ophthalmology (surgery and medicine on the eye) are harder to get into. However, due to the intense and long training, there are many shortages in these areas.
