Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role for a Design Engineer located in the Greater Derby Area. The Design Engineer will be responsible for developing and refining product designs, conducting design calculations and validation, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet project requirements. Duties include creating and detailing CAD models, performing structural and fatigue life cycle analysis, and generating design documents and manuals. The role will also entail managing design projects to ensure timely and cost-effective completion.

- Work on several jobs concurrently, maintaining high standards
- Ensuring all design solutions have incorporated DIAM Group best practice materials, features & techniques
- Test components prior to production to ensure they are fit for purpose
- Ensuring health, safety and the environment are respected in design specifications
- Domestic and overseas travel as required
Your key skills/experience will include:
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in the retail design industry
- Must be proficient in Solidworks, 3D modelling and 2D drawing creation
- Excellent knowledge of a variety of materials and manufacturing processes
- Good time management skills & ability to work on multiple projects at a time

JOB PURPOSE
Middleton Engineering has been a leader in waste recycling solutions for nearly 50 years. As we continue to grow, we are looking for a talented Design Engineer (CAD) to join our team and help drive our projects forward.
As a Design Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in developing new products and improving existing machinery used in the waste recycling industry. You will be responsible for creating detailed 2D and 3D CAD models, producing technical drawings, and collaborating closely with production teams, suppliers, and customers to bring designs to life.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES
· Design & Development: Work on the design of new equipment, ensuring innovation and efficiency in manufacturing.
· Technical Drawings: Produce and maintain accurate drawings for products, components, and installations using AutoCAD (3D Inventor preferred).
· Measurement & Analysis: Take precise measurements of existing machinery and incorporate findings into new designs.
· Project Management: Progress projects from initial concept through to completion, ensuring deadlines and specifications are met.
· Supplier & Customer Interaction: Liaise with suppliers on technical specifications and components, as well as attend site visits to assess requirements and provide project support.

The role
As a
Design Engineer
, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You'll be at the heart of national defence infrastructure, providing technical support and design consultancy for electrical systems across both nuclear and non-nuclear facilities, including Ministry of Defence (MOD) establishments.
Day-to-day, you'll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, tackle challenging legacy infrastructure, and help shape the future of critical systems that keep the Royal Navy operational.
- Providing technical support for existing electrical systems and equipment
- Specifying replacement components and maintaining configuration documentation

The Primary Substation Engineer – HV role will be reporting to the Principal Substation Engineer – HV and will be responsible for ensuring the quality and consistency of outputs in the production and control of drawings and technical documents.
You will also work with the Power Sector Director to assist during the bid process in order to secure further work.
What You Will Do
- You must have experience in the production of all designs, calculations, reports & drawings associated with new or modification of HV substation projects from 11kV – 400kV, covering primary design and engineering elements.
- This will cover the production of single line diagrams, primary layouts, technical specifications and other design deliverables detailed below.
- The candidate must have a reasonable level of maths and science, preferably from a power engineering background and have good communication skills.
- The candidate must be enthusiastic, mature enough to operate in a diverse team and work without full time supervision. This role will open to many career paths for the employee as they develop through BakerHicks.
