We are seeking candidates for this discipline leadership position to manage and grow the existing team and provide technical leadership to the function.
Our engineering team is growing to meet increased demand for UK projects across a range of sectors including energy transition & resilience; nuclear & defence; water; highways; aviation and rail.
The Civil & Structural Engineering (C&S) team includes responsibility for Civil, Structural Engineers, Geotechnical Engineers, Hydraulic Engineers, Temporary Works Engineers, Highways & Drainage Engineers and Infrastructure Project Engineers. This team currently stands at 60 head count with secured demand to support consistent growth.
The Discipline Manager will report to the Group Director of Engineering Services and is responsible for technical and line management of the discipline teams and the delivery of engineering design on projects through its people, processes and systems.
This is a (hybrid) office based role, located at the Costain Engineering hub in Manchester with an expectation of office based working for two to three days per week. Our informal dynamic working policy allows all employees to discuss and agree flexibility to where, when and how they work based on individual preferences and subject to role requirements and team needs.

Responsibilities
- Lead the discipline team, providing resource to multiple projects, ensuring skillset matches project demands
- Ensure the department budget and utilisation targets are achieved
- Forecast resource requirements and recruit staff and agency resources as required
- Be responsible for staff performance management and development planning
- Have in depth knowledge of resource requirements, availability in the local market, potential additional suppliers and discipline specific skill sets in high demand
- Ensure delivery team perform compliant works, adhere to corporate process
- Aid the professional development of individuals and coordinate with professional institutions
- Develop technical design and build phase manhour estimates to support work winning and tendering activities for projects and studies
- Responsible for the team Technical assurance, with a focus on engineering and design operations as part of a multi-discipline technically focussed team
- Responsible for achieving safe-by-design, compliant, future proofed, cost-effective, sustainable, digitally enabled technical output.
- Responsible for corporate processes, including technical, competency, software systems, technical standards, innovation and ensuring lessons learnt are embedded.
- Have strong knowledge of UK regulatory framework and global best practice for areas of focus, such as The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and BS5975-1 Temporary Works Management.
- Support at all stages of project delivery and client engagement
Qualifications
- Degree qualified in an appropriate subject area
- Chartered Engineer
- Recent UK project experience
- Understanding of diverse sectors, e.g. Nuclear, Energy, Roads, Rail, Aviation, Water;
- Understanding of the whole delivery process from work winning to scheme handover
- Ability to communicate effectively, have a flexible outlook, able to deliver presentations
- Able to travel mainly across the UK and visit project sites / suppliers, at short notice occasionally
- Able to prioritise work and meet multiple deadlines
- Current Security Clearance or Eligibility to obtain Security Clearance - UK Citizen or 5 years UK residency.
