Operations Manager - Mechanical Engineering

We're seeking an experienced Operations Manager to join our clients engineering business, leading critical day-to-day operations while delivering impactful improvements across workshop and site-based services.

This is a hands-on, high-accountability role at the heart of our business , it is ideally suited to someone with a strong background in mechanical engineering, particularly in industrial pumps, motors, gearboxes, and rotating equipment. You'll be responsible for driving efficiency, margin improvement, work-flow, and team leadership across the full job life-cycle from quotation through to delivery.



What You'll Be Doing:

  • Leading operations across workshop, site services, and engineering teams

  • Overseeing production planning, work-flow, and resource allocation

  • Ensuring high-quality delivery of repairs and refurbishments of pumps, motors, and gear systems

  • Managing job costing, margins, labour planning, and customer delivery standards

  • Implementing and enforcing health & safety, quality, and compliance procedures

  • Driving a culture of continuous improvement, with lean methodology and best practice at the core

  • Liaising with internal stakeholders including Sales, Admin, and Project Engineers to align business objectives



What You'll Bring:

  • A strong background in mechanical engineering - ideally in repair, maintenance, and overhaul of industrial equipment

  • Experience managing operational teams in manufacturing, servicing , or engineering workshop environments

Our client is a dynamic organization seeking a proactive and results-oriented Operations Manager to oversee their key business functions. This role requires a strong leader to ensure efficiency, productivity, and high standards across all operational activities. You will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations, driving process improvements, and supporting the strategic goals of the company. The position offers a blend of office-based oversight and strategic planning, with a need for consistent presence at our central hub.

The Operations Manager will lead teams, manage resources, and implement operational strategies to optimize performance. This includes overseeing supply chain management, logistics, quality control, and customer service operations. You will be responsible for developing and implementing operational policies and procedures, setting performance metrics, and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs). Budget management, cost control, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards are also crucial aspects of the role. Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for effective team management and stakeholder engagement. We are looking for an individual who can inspire and motivate teams to achieve excellence.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Overseeing daily operations and ensuring seamless workflow across departments.
  • Developing and implementing operational strategies to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Managing and motivating operational teams, providing guidance and performance feedback.
  • Ensuring adherence to quality standards, safety regulations, and company policies.
  • Managing budgets, P&L, and financial controls for operational departments.
  • Identifying opportunities for process improvement and implementing best practices.
  • Overseeing supply chain, logistics, and inventory management.
  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers and key stakeholders.
  • Monitoring key performance indicators and reporting on operational performance to senior management.
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, or a related field, with a minimum of 6 years of experience in operations management. Proven experience in process improvement, team leadership, and budget management is essential. Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and decision-making skills are required. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational abilities are crucial. This role requires regular attendance at our main office in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, UK , to effectively manage and lead the operational teams.
