Environmental Specialist is responsible for supporting the Environment & Sustainability Program at McCormick Peterborough site. The role, which reports to the SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) Lead, involves the review and continuous improvement of Environmental policies, practices and processes to assure compliance with local Environmental regulatory requirements whilst applying engineering knowledge to identify and deliver sustainability opportunities aligned to McCormick PLP (Purpose-lead Performance) Agenda.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for Environmental Management System ensuring compliance with statutory duty and on-site leadership of McCormick PLP Sustainability agenda.
  • li>Guide and assist Crew Leads, SHE committee representatives to meet programs and activities required by local law (including workplace audits and incident investigations).
  • Follow up implementation of Environment initiatives / provide reports and feedback to regional stakeholders.
  • Development Policies and Procedures for Environment related activities and ensures appropriate communication
  • Host legislative and compliance audits, ensuring support from cross functional teams to deliver success outcomes.
  • Ensure that incident investigations are conducted in a timely manner and follow up action plan

CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant Engineering or Sustainability field (Chemical, Food Processing, Mechanical, Industrial or Electrical Engineering) preferred.
  • Nebosh Environmental Certificate or equivalent
  • Previous experience in Environmental Engineer, Supervisor, Coordinator or similar role.
  • Relevant experience in driving sustainability agendas in highly automated process environments - FMCG, pharmaceutical, chemical, oil and gas industry preferred.
  • Well-versed with MCP & IPPC Permit, Incident Investigation and UK compliance regulations.
  • Previous experience in delivery efficiencies in utility consumption, waste reduction along with designing leading and lagging indicators to drive both physical and cultural behaviours.
  • Knowledge of utility tracking and efficiency initiatives.
  • Strong communication and diplomacy skills with all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to influence without direct reporting structure.
  • Good computer skills - Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint.

Responsibilities

As part of a project team, perform all conventional aspects of Environmental scope area. This may include:

Developing environmental deliverables such as Environmental Philosophies, Environmental Impact Identification (ENVID) Reports, Environmental Management Plans, Emissions Inventories, Terms of Reference (ToRs) for workshops and Scopes of Work (SoW) for studies.

Supporting studies focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring alignment with net-zero commitments.

Providing expert guidance on environmental compliance, including Best Available Techniques (BAT), and ensuring regulatory adherence throughout project lifecycles.

Coordination and liaison with third-party contractors undertaking environmental studies, such as Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) and site baseline surveys.

Environmental representation in ENVID and BAT reviews.

Managing environmental aspects of projects, including budgeting, scheduling, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to achieve environmental objectives.

Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint with the ability to create reports, analyze data, and present information effectively.

Experience with GIS and air dispersion modeling software is desirable.

Must have experience working on an Aramco project.

Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years related experience, with average experience ranging from 6-10 years.

Bachelor’s degree (BEng or BSc) in Environmental Engineering or a related field such as Chemical Engineering.

Membership in a relevant engineering, science, or environmental institute.

This is a full-time, permanent position. Working alongside an experienced team based in Sheffield, serving  7 UK offices on projects across the UK, you will get involved with a wide variety of geotechnical and land contamination projects covering sectors including energy, infrastructure, renewable energy, development/regeneration projects and local authorities.
What you can expect in this position:
As a geo-environmental engineer you’ll be responsible for undertaking project investigations, with a focus on site-based work. This will include both geo-environmental and geotechnical site investigations, data interpretation and reporting. The role would suit someone with a proactive ‘can do’ approach, close attention to detail, enthusiasm to get the job done well and ability to get on with a wide range of people.


What you'll be doing:

  • Undertaking Preliminary Risk Assessments (Phase 1 Desk Studies) and intrusive site investigations for environmental and/or geotechnical purposes in line with national standards and codes of practice.
  • li>Managing fieldwork activities including supervising drilling and excavation works, and undertaking gas and groundwater monitoring, groundwater sampling and surface water sampling. You will be logging rocks and soils and carrying out in situ testing.
  • Supervising Remediation and Earthworks projects and liaising with Contractors to ensure works are executed in line with an approved specification.
  • Supporting the project managers in planning new projects including liaising with subcontractors and suppliers and preparing health, safety, environment and quality documentation.
  • Scheduling soil, rock and water samples for chemical and geotechnical laboratory testing.
  • Splitting your time approximately 50/50 site works to office time with occasional requirement to stay away from home for the more distant projects.
  • Writing factual and interpretative reports.
  • Supporting Managers in preparing fee proposals.

What we're looking for:

  • BSc degree level qualified in Geology, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science or a related subject essential.
  • • 1-3 years previous relevant work experience
