Job Description

Permanent

Salary: £120k-140k

Location: Office in London, remote working fully supported. International travel for certain projects / engagements.

Contract: We welcome applications from people who are interested in seeking a full or part time, perman ent role.

Do you work in the field of digital technology, in the broadest sense? Is knowledge and expertise in technology a key part of what you do? We’re looking for people from a broad range of technology backgrounds to join our consulting team - IT leaders, tech leads in software companies, Chief Technology/Data/Information Officers, tech start-up founders, leaders and managers of technology-centred services or platforms. This is a long list, because we know there’s no set path for a digital technology career.

Our ideal candidate will combine one area of technology specialism, alongside a broad curiosity for all digital technology, proven leadership and the ability to turn your experiences into impactful stories for our clients.

At Public Digital, we’ll ask you to apply those skills as consultants, but a style of consultancy grounded in lived experience: your lived experience, and the lived experiences of the wider Public Digital team.

Day-to-day, you’ll be an advisor and coach, you’ll facilitate, convene, write and present. For your specialist technology skills, you’ll sometimes apply those skills directly as a practitioner-coach - showing by doing, whilst helping our clients learn from the skills and experience you have.

We think Public Digital offers a unique opportunity - allowing those with digital skills and experience to amplify their impact. We think it’s also a unique way to learn, working closely, day-to-day, within teams with rich and broad experience different to your own.

You’ll be asked to be part of multidisciplinary, multi-functional consulting teams, helping our varied clients with a diverse set of challenges and opportunities. From helping them deliver impactful digital services, researching complex new domains, or make tangible progress with large-scale organisational reform and culture change.

We help global institutions that matter thrive in the internet era. We apply the culture, processes, business models and technologies of the internet era to help teams build and run excellent services. Working with the leaders doing strategy, and the teams doing delivery, we operate globally, advising large organisations and governments on six continents.

We’re values-driven and we articulated them in our ‘positions’ on the Public Digital website.

Attitude as much as skill, is critically important to us as a team and we look for entrepreneurialism, initiative, kindness, and a willingness to pitch in. Our theory of change is: Digital. Teams. Work - we fundamentally believe transformation is about people, and that change comes from creating great teams and the conditions to successfully empower them.

Role overview

Our clients want to deliver more value using internet-era technology. We’re looking for highly experienced technology leaders to work at a senior level, helping our clients understand their current digital capability, identify and remove barriers that prevent them from providing great technology, and build new capabilities.

We know that great technology is only part of a great internet-era organisation and need people who can go deep on the technology but are equally adept working on all the organisational challenges that impact delivery. You’ll be comfortable working at the most senior levels of organisations to inform and develop strategy, and adept at the day-to-day rhythms of building and scaling teams who deliver human-centred digital products and services.

What You’ll do for us:

  • Shape and scale digital transformation within large, complex organisations, helping clients to build the right teams with the right talent at the right times, so that our clients have their own sustainable digital capability and ways of working.
  • Support and influence executives at the most senior levels of organisations and governments, building their digital instincts and knowledge, with a particular focus on technology.
  • Exemplify and articulate the benefits of digital ways of working, with a constant focus on user-centred outcomes.
  • Assess clients’ technology and wider digital maturity in order to help them focus their transformation efforts.
  • Be able to assess, attract and develop world-class digital transformation practitioners.
  • Be comfortable with ambiguous, fast-paced and often political environments, and able to unblock tactical and strategic issues as they arise.
  • Contribute to the wider growth and culture of Public Digital, helping to improve the way we work, and having a public voice on digital transformation.

Requirements

What we’re looking for:

  • Exceptional stakeholder management at board or ministerial level.
  • Significant experience of shaping and scaling internet-era technology delivery and operations, with hands-on experience of public cloud services, and continuous delivery practices.
  • Understanding of the ongoing challenges of running a complex technology estate over time, and common structural, process, and financial challenges.
  • Influential communicator with clarity of thought and delivery to diverse audiences.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, comfortable in highly ambiguous environments.
  • Pragmatic approach to building solid, sustainable and productive working relationships.
  • Drive and passion in owning work from start to finish.
  • Financially and commercially literate, comfortable understanding clients’ licensing and contractual landscape.
  • Ability to create and sustain a working culture that is agile, open, humble and diverse, where delivery teams feel empowered to do their best work.
  • Ability to talk with credibility, and influence people who are in a range of technology-related professions practitioners, from software developers, through to ITIL/ITSM process specialists

You may also have:

  • Experience leading multiple multi-disciplinary teams producing user-facing digital services along the lines described in the UK government’s digital service standard.
  • Experience of managing the end of major technology contracts and/or migrating mission-critical “legacy” applications.

Benefits

  • Deliver high-impact work with leading institutions around the world
  • An opportunity to work strategically at a leadership level, helping decision makers to make informed decisions.
  • Grow with us: the opportunity to grow and progress rapidly within an engaged, supportive environment
  • Be empowered to do your best work
  • Home and remote working, flexibility in how you deliver work
  • Focus on learning, development and progression
  • Reach a global audience as a thought leader on technology and service design: publish blog posts and other articles; speak at conferences and events as a representative of Public Digital
  • Buddy system and prioritised mental health
  • Generous holiday allowance - 30 days plus public holidays, additional 5 days for Christmas office closure.
  • Private healthcare
  • Flexible Benefits Allowance.
