As Train Cleaner, you will be responsible for maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards of trains, ensuring a safe and pleasant environment for passengers and staff. This role plays a crucial part in the overall maintenance and appearance of trains, contributing to a positive customer experience.
Your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and vacuuming to maintain a tidy environment inside the train
- Inspect and report any damages, graffiti, or vandalism to the appropriate authorities for prompt resolution.
- Monitor and replenish cleaning supplies as needed, ensuring that all necessary materials are on hand to perform daily tasks.
- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a secure work environment.
- Follow procedures for handling and disposing of cleaning chemicals and materials.
The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:
- Must have Right to Work in the UK.
- Previous experience in cleaning would be advantageous.
- You will have strong communication skills.
- Willingness to work night and weekend shifts.
Additional information:
- You will need to pass a medical and drug and alcohol test prior to starting in this role.
- You will also be required to complete a Depot Track Safety (DTS) training course.

About the job
The holder of this post is responsible for cleaning and presentation of trains, ensuring all trains are clean and presented to the highest standard.
Ensuring cleaning duties are carried out in accordance with Train Presentation Standards and any local instructions.
You will use only approved equipment, chemicals and wear the appropriate personal protective equipment in accordance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH).
Your main responsibilities will be:
- Ensure your personal safety and that of others, including that of visitors and contractors at all times.
- Assist traincrew and station staff in undertaking emergency procedures and evacuation procedures when required.
- Provide a safe, courteous and helpful service at all times.
- Comply with the Rules as defined in Network Rail Group Standard, South Western Railway Trains Employee Handbook, other regulations and Instructions, Group Standards and Legislation.
- To assist customers as appropriate, especially those with special needs or at times of service disruption.
- Clean and present trains for service in accordance with Train Presentation Standards.
- Provide managers and supervisors with proactive information that delivers higher and improved train presentation standards.
- Undertake cleaning of biological hazards.
- Observe COSHH Regulations in place.
- Complete paperwork as required, detailing and signing for all work carried out.
- Dispose of waste, including bio-waste and sharps in accordance with local instructions.
- Advise Manager of any problems or defects identified.
- To undertake additional tasks as required by the local manager applicable to the role.
- Wear uniform (including name badge) and safety clothing as supplied, ensuring that your standard of appearance complies with the company standard and is high at all times.
As a minimum, you will need to have:

About the location
Salisbury Depot is home to South Western Railway's award winning Class 15X diesel fleet. The engineering team at the depot are responsible for all aspects of maintenance and repair of the trains, this includes; engines, transmissions, electrical control equipment, HVAC and the passenger environment amongst many other systems.
Serving the West of England, the SWR Class 15X are the long-standing reliability and performance leaders in their field across the UK due to the hard working team at Salisbury depot.
