Engineering that protects lives
At AVIRE , we design emergency communication systems that safeguard people in high-rise buildings and critical infrastructure across six continents. Whether it is a passenger trapped in a lift during a power failure or a wheelchair user unable to evacuate during a fire, our technology ensures every call for help is heard and answered. Installed in over four million buildings worldwide, our systems give reassurance when it matters most.
This is engineering with purpose. Your work will directly help ensure that no one is left behind in an emergency.
You will join a close-knit, international R&D team where every voice is heard and respected. We offer structured mentoring, regular 1-to-1s, and clear development pathways to help you grow as an engineer, including support for gaining chartership. Learn more about our R&D teams in Maidenhead (UK), Barcelona (ES), and Sussex (US) here .
We welcome engineers from a wide variety of backgrounds and have strong experience supporting STEM returners and those moving from regulated sectors such as aerospace, automotive, and defence.
What you will do
- Develop new features and subsystems from first concept to full production.
- Write embedded firmware in C (and optionally Rust) for STM32, ESP32, Raspberry Pi Compute Modules, and NXP i.MX platforms.
- Support hardware design with schematic capture, layout review, and hands-on prototyping.
- Build scalable test tools in Python, C#, and other languages to validate designs and support production.
- Shape architecture and component choices to balance performance, longevity, and user needs.
- Join field trials, listen to user feedback, and guide design decisions with insight and care.
What we look for
- Passion for making the world safer through thoughtful engineering.
- Ability to bring clarity and structure to complex technical challenges.
- Collaborative mindset that values different perspectives and shared success.
- Pride in detail and commitment to doing things the right way.
Experience we are likely to see
- Degree (2:1 or above) in Electronics, Embedded Systems, Computer Engineering, or similar.
- Embedded C (or Rust) for real-time applications.
- Confidence with schematic capture (we use KiCad) and standard lab debugging tools.
- Exposure to test automation in Python, C#, or similar.
- Familiarity with design for manufacture, compliance, or production testing.
If this role excites you but you do not meet every requirement, we encourage you to apply. Careers are not linear, and we value potential as much as experience.
Flexibility and balance
Our engineering team typically works Tuesday to Thursday in the Maidenhead office, with flexibility for home working on other days (depending upon project needs). We welcome requests for flexible hours, part-time arrangements, or job sharing, and will discuss any specific needs openly during the process. Because of the hands-on nature of this role, it is not suitable for full-time remote work.
About AVIRE
AVIRE is part of Halma plc , a FTSE-listed group of life-saving technology companies. With the backing of a global group and the agility of a small team, you will have the resources to innovate and the autonomy to make a real impact. Our products are already installed in more than four million buildings worldwide, and we are just getting started.
