Join us and help be the energy behind the change. National Gas is the backbone of Britain's energy system. We're responsible for securing the UK's energy, whilst leading the way to a net-zero future. As the operator of Britain’s national gas transmission network, we repair and maintain gas pipelines, safely and reliably delivering gas to power stations, industries and 23 million homes. Our skilled teams work to keep the gas flowing to our customers, generating power and helping to keep everyone connected. We’re pioneering new solutions like hydrogen transmission to help decarbonise energy, so our infrastructure continues to power the country as it transitions to net-zero. As a graduate joining National Gas, it’s an inspiring environment where you know your work will directly contribute to keeping the nation’s energy secure today, whilst building a more sustainable, net-zero energy system for tomorrow.
About The Role
The Asset Graduates have a brilliant opportunity to work alongside experts, who every day, are shaping policy for National Gas. The energy industry is changing, and our network needs to evolve to meet the challenge. They do this by ensuring that our company assets are adapted and maintained regularly to reflect the ever-evolving nature of the energy sector. Our assets make sure that homes are heated, businesses are running, and power stations are able to generate. We have a greener future to plan for environmental commitments to meet and hydrogen to think about. We have a duty to every bill payer to deliver this efficiently - managing our assets is critical to everybody in the UK.
The Chemical Engineering Graduate will sit within the Policy, Engineering, Maintenance and Environment (PEME) team. This team are responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of critical energy infrastructure, including gas transmission systems and high-voltage electrical equipment. Their core mission is to prevent the uncontrolled release of hazardous energy, while maintaining asset integrity and protecting people, the environment, and the network. You’ll join a team who apply process and chemical engineering expertise, to manage risk and maintain compliance. You’ll contribute to safety studies, collaborate with our operations teams to uphold asset integrity, and investigate incidents to drive continuous improvement. The team sets technical standards, shaping safety policies and promoting best practice across legislation and codes. In addition, they play a key role in supporting the transition to low-carbon technologies like hydrogen and carbon capture, ensuring safety remains a top priority throughout.
During this 18-month programme, after your initial induction, you’ll complete three 6-month placements. This will cover all teams within the Asset business function, so that you can have exposure to different, yet relevant experiences and skillsets that will set you up for your career. You’ll also benefit from working in a diverse, supportive team at the heart of network engineering and asset development.
About You
As a graduate, you’ll learn from and collaborate with experienced professionals while taking responsibility for your own tasks, from supporting safety studies, to helping investigate incidents and identify lessons learned. You’ll develop clear thinking, analytical skills, and a proactive approach to risk management. This is a fantastic opportunity to build your expertise through structured training and real-world projects, while contributing to a safer, cleaner energy future. Within this role, you’ll learn how to apply your engineering knowledge to ensure that critical systems operate safely and reliably, because in our world, a single event can have major consequences. You’ll gain hands-on experience in process safety, working on highly technical challenges, so the ability to think clearly, problem-solve, and work across multidisciplinary teams is key. A genuine interest in your subject area is invaluable, as is the passion and determination to succeed and grow. Approaching tasks with care and commitment, alongside a strong desire to achieve the best possible outcomes, will be key to making the most of this scheme. We celebrate the different experiences our colleagues bring to our organisation and strongly encourage applicants of all backgrounds to apply.
What You'll Need
You’ll need a degree in:
- Chemical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
A good application will include a cover letter to help us to understand why you're a great fit for the role. Be sure to include any other relevant experience or university modules.
Studies suggest that women tend to apply only if they meet 100% of the criteria. If you resonate with our mission, the role excites you and your skills align, we encourage you to apply.

Position Details
School of Chemical Engineering
Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK
Full time starting salary is normally in the range £36,636 to £6,049 with potential progression once in post to 8,822
Grade: 7
Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to December 2027
Closing date: 11th November 2025
BackgroundA unique opportunity for a successful applicant to undertake research in electrochemistry, surface chemistry and bionanotechnology, developing smart peptide interfaces that can be switched ON and OFF electrochemically for real-time protein detection in complex biological systems.
Cells secrete key signalling proteins such as cytokines and growth factors that are critical for understanding their behaviour, health and therapeutic potential. However, current methods to measure these molecules are slow, offline and require disruptive sampling, limiting progress in cell therapy manufacturing and advanced bioprocessing.
The aim of this project is to develop electrochemical switchable nanobody sensors that provide ondemand, high-sensitivity detection of proteins directly in culture media over extended periods. The focus will be on microelectrode array fabrication, responsive interface engineering, and advanced electrochemical analysis, with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) as the primary technique, supported by complementary methods such as voltammetry, to achieve reliable, picogram‑level sensitivity. By combining principles of electrochemistry, nanofabrication and molecular recognition, this research will establish a new paradigm for in‑situ monitoring of dynamic biological systems by exploiting switchable peptide interfaces that can be turned ON and OFF on demand.
This is a 2‑year position within the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham. The successful candidate will join the Mendes Research Group, an internationally recognised team pioneering stimuli‑responsive surfaces and biosensing technologies.
Essential: PhD (or near completion) in Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related area; strong experimental skills in electrochemical techniques and sensor development; track record of high‑quality publications.
Desirable: experience with protein detection, nanostructured electrodes, antifouling strategies, or biosensing in complex fluids.
This position offers outstanding training in cutting‑edge biosensing, electrochemistry and nanotechnology, providing an excellent platform for a career in academia, healthcare technologies, or the growing diagnostics and bioprocessing industries.
