Job Description
We are known for our world-leading environment reporting, and as a business we hold ourselves to the same high standards when it comes to our own impact on the climate and nature. In 2019 the Guardian set an ambitious goal: cut our greenhouse gas emissions by two-thirds while deepening our leadership in environment journalism. We’ve reduced our footprint, expanded climate coverage and helped shape the global debate. We’ve also strengthened the sustainability of our internal operations in the last five years. Read our latest environment pledge here .
We are looking for a new Sustainability Manager to help maintain our current high standards and drive progress in new areas. The sustainability team at the Guardian is a small central team so this role will have a big influence on our priorities and have a lot of visibility across the organisation.
The role will report into the Director Sustainability & Operational Transformation and work closely with wider teams across our business, including workplace, publishing (newspaper operations), advertising, communications and regional offices in the US and Australia.
About the Role
Project management of our annual carbon auditing process, including coordinating data collection across the departments; working with our external consultancy to ensure the results are robust and identifying areas for further improvement and ways to expand our measurement to new parts of our supply chain. Support the ongoing rollout of our pioneering climate literacy training to staff across the business. Be a key point of contact and active participant in industry-wide initiatives such as Ad Net Zero, identifying opportunities for the Guardian to share its expertise and drive progress in areas such as measurement of advertising emissions and climate literacy. Work with other departments to embed sustainability initiatives in their areas of the business and identify new and innovative ways that we can address our environmental impact. Help plan and deliver internal communications and events for staff on sustainability-related topics, create materials, and work with our Comms team on how best to engage our audiences on our progress and plans to colleagues. Champion sustainability action across the business and the media industry.
About You
A real passion for sustainability and how businesses respond to the climate crisis. Strong project management skills, including creating and managing project plans, driving delivery to deadlines, identifying risks and managing stakeholder input. Strong data literacy skills, able to interpret data and make it understandable for others with strong attention to detail in maintaining data quality and organising data sources. Able to build relationships across the organisation and influence others - from senior management to team leaders and wider staff. Previous experience and/or understanding of the digital and print media ecosystem.
We operate in a hybrid environment working 3 days a week from our offices in Kings Cross and 2 days a week remotely.
We value and respect all differences (seen and unseen) in all people. We aspire to have inclusive working experiences and an environment that reflects the audience we serve, where our people have equal access to career development opportunities, their voices are heard and can contribute to our future. We actively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. Many of our staff work flexibly and we will consider all requests for flexible working arrangements.

The closing date for applications is Thursday 23rd October 2025.
